Horst Tappert investigates a drug and white slavery ring
29 April 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"The Man with the Glass Eye" is a decent late krimi, but a bit of a mixed bag. It has excellent color, carried into the intriguing set and production design. Horst Tappert makes a good detective in these movies. The setting is on the exotic and entertaining side, what with chorus girls called the "Las Vegas Girls", a knife thrower and a ventriloquist with an oversize dummy.

The drawbacks are that Tappert's boss, Sir Arthur, is just too dense to be believable. He's played strictly for laughs and he's on screen too much. Then even more comedy is introduced through Tappert's assistant, a young man with irritating intonation, whether undubbed or even more so when dubbed. There is one fight that goes on too long again, as in an earlier one of these color krimis.

Otherwise the story, which is about a dual heroin and white slavery ring, is not bad. Karin Hubner does a notable job acting, and some of the other supporting parts are well played.

So, if you can put up with the excessive and really quite silly comedy, then the movie comes out about average.
