The main point of this picture is that supervisors . . .

. . . are pointless at best, Affronts to Humanity at worst. LA FEET'S DEFEAT begins with a police inspector forcing his sergeant to serve as a menial lackey, polishing his superior's foot wear. This demeaning exercise in workplace servitude is interrupted by the Inspector's boss dispatching his underling--and, consequently--the middle man's serf, on what turns into an apparent wild goose hunt. The frequent object of abuse, Sgt. Dodo is particularly endangered here, falling off a cliff, getting chewed up by gators that are populating a moat, being electrocuted, becoming cannon fodder before having three trains flatten him as a prelude to stepping on four exploding land mines. To rub in salt to injury, the Big Cheese Commissioner has engineered all of this mayhem as a prank his rank allows him to pull on his subordinates.

Muddy capturing

Do get enjoyment on the whole out of The Inspector series. A series mostly well worth watching with even some very good to great efforts, though would be lying if saying all of them are great, some being very, very average. The Inspector is one of DePatie-Freleng Enterprises' better characters, being a character interesting, funny and likeable enough in personality to warrant his own theatrical series.

Just when the series was starting to get tired, by all means still watchable but there was starting to become a running out of ideas vibe, 'La Feet's Defeat' comes along and one gets a sense of how the series was at its best. Conceptually it is one of the most different and most interesting The Inspector cartoons, namely as said in the characterisation and treatment of Sergeant Deux Deux, and stands out from the rest. To me, it's easily the best The Inspector cartoon since 'Transylvania Mania' and one of the best of The Inspector series overall.

There is very little to dislike about 'La Feet's Defeat'. Will say though that there is a preference for Pat Harrington Jr's voice work for Deux Deux, one of the joys of when he appeared in the series was how Harrington voiced both The Inspector and Deux Deux and did so well providing such different inidividual personalities with such ease. Don Messick does voice a younger and more naiive Deux Deux quite well and it played to his strengths as a voice actor, but being not used to his voice it felt somewhat strange hearing Deux Deux voiced by somebody else.

However, the animation is simple but never cheap-looking, while the somewhat abstract backgrounds have nice attention to detail and sparseness isn't an issue. Especially love the colours though, simple but rich. The music has energy but also a jazzy slinkiness that never jars. The energy is constant while not feeling rushed, while the different but not out of character take on Deux Deux was a likeable and amusing one. His chemistry and personality contrast to the bumbling Inspector, whose bumbling is down-played but not absent, are true to character though and continue to enjoy their interactions, it was sad that 'La Feet's Defeat' is the last time we see Deux Deux. Pat Harrington Jr as ever does a great job as the Inspector and Marvin Miller does nicely as the Commissioner, do prefer Paul Frres though.

'La Feet's Defeat' is a very funny cartoon, one of the funniest latter cartoons. Love the irony in the word play and dialogue, but it's the physical comedy, with poor Deux Deux atypically getting the worst of it, that's even funnier. The energy never lets up and the comedy doesn't get too mean-spirited or brutal. Another interest point is the ending, one of the series' most unexpected and cleverest.

Summing up, very nicely done. 8/10

This is a bit different from the norm and quite funny

Warning: Spoilers
This is an Inspector short from DePatie-Freleng. There will be spoilers ahead:

The Inspector and Sergeant Deux-Deux are given the assignment of tracking down Muddy La Feet. Deux-Deux has a serious case of hero worship for The Inspector as they go out looking for La Feet.

At first glance, this might seem like a typical Inspector short, but there's a significant difference. Instead of The Inspector getting repeatedly hurt in mishaps, Deux-Deux winds up taking all the hits in this one. Having the perpetually happy and cheerful Deux-Deux face crocodiles and trip land mines is a refreshing change from The Inspector stumbling into disasters.

The end of the short is a bit out of the ordinary and funnier than normal. I won't spoil the ending.

This short is on one of two DVDs containing all 34 of the Inspector shorts. This short and the DVDs are well worth getting. Recommended.
