Jose here to commemorate Fanny Brice's birthday. The extravagant comedienne would've turned 118 today. Yes, seriously, watching her energy in films like The Great Ziegfeld (where she played herself) or listening to her vibrant musical performances it's easy to think that this woman could've lived forever.
A New Yorker born from Hungarian parents, she made a way for herself in the burlesque world and later by her association with Florenz Ziegfeld. She became a huge musical star and a popular radio personality with her Baby Snooks character.
But what remains fascinating about Brice is that she pulled off an enviable career using raw talent. Would someone like her fit in our current notions of what makes an entertainer appealing?
Sure her life was plagued with scandal (her marriage to Nicky Arnstein wasn't as tragically romantic as pop culture has us think) and that would've fit wonderfully in our tabloid loving society. »

Q: Do you know if any of the contestants on Survivor: Samoa are going to be Glbt? I just checked out their profiles and at least three of the guys list things like "womanizer", "never been rejected", and "a woman's dream." Is CBS trying to overly heteroize the show that has been strategically won by at least two openly gay men (Todd and Hatch)? – Topher, Toronto, Canada
A: There are no gay male contestants that we know of (although it’s always possible someone hasn’t yet come out to the network).
Is CBS trying to “heteroize” the show? Although I love your coining of a new term, I’d strenuously argue that they’re not. In fact, we recently talked with Jeff Probst, and I’m convinced he doesn’t see the show in those terms at all.
“When you look at the long-term of the show, you hopefully have some diversity, »

A Note from the Flying Monkey: Of the many emails I receive every week for my column, some are so good that they simply can’t be answered in just a few words. Hollywood producer Jon Peters has pulled plans to release an explosive memoir detailing Tinseltown's most torrid secrets - after he was threatened by a series of lawsuits from some of the industry's biggest players.
The Batman boss had agreed a $700,000 (£462,350) deal with Harper-Collins Publishers for his insightful tome, titled Studio Head, which blew the lid on the behind-the-scenes goings-on of stars including his ex-girlfriend Barbra Streisand.
In the book's proposal to the publishers, which was leaked to New York gossip column PageSix, Peters claimed Streisand had a string of affairs with her co-stars Robert Redford, Ryan O'Neal And Kris Kristofferson.
But the tell-all book has not gone down well with Peters' peers - a string of legal threats have forced him to scrap the memoir in its entirety.
In a letter to publishing director Michael Morrison, obtained by PageSix, Peters writes, "I must decline your current kind and generous offer to publish my autobiography... circumstances far beyond my imagination have caused me to remove the project from the marketplace at this time. Unfortunate leaks of the proposal have created a firestorm in the press, from Page Six to CNN and seemingly every other gossip page and entertainment news show in between.
"Somehow this proposal has become a kind of Holy Grail of gossip, and I have become Hollywood's 'Man Who Knows Too Much.'
"I have been besieged by potential lawsuits and threatened litigation by some of the most important figures in the world of show business.
"What's worse... is the fact that I consider all these people my friends... I want my book to be a celebration of, never an attack upon, the remarkable people I have known and worked with."
But Peters hints in the letter that the furore around Studio Head will not prevent him from releasing his memoirs in the future - insisting he wants to "work on this project privately and quietly". »
