A very strange world indeed
4 August 2007 | by (Worcester, MA) – See all my reviews

In the annals of cult cinema, José Mojica Marins is a true original. Brazil's first and foremost horror filmmaker, there's really nothing else out there similar to Coffin Joe. Even his lesser films such as this one remain utterly fascinating and unique for various reasons. Even though a few comparisons can be made, Marins seems to be remarkably free of influences from outside cinema. Hes also one intense man, witness his frequent bouts of bizarre and inarticulate Nietzschian philosophy. As I said above, "The Strange World of Coffin Joe" is probably the weakest effort I've seen from the man, but it still remains very intriguing.

Its an anthology of horror stories, and like most of these, its rather inconsistent. The first story, "The Dollmaker", is a rather predictable tale and the most traditional of them all. However, the sudden bits of violence towards the end are surprising and entertaining. The second story, "Obsession", is kind of like Coffin Joe's "City Lights". Its a tale of necrophilia involving a Chaplin-like tramp and played completely in pantomime. Its probably the least of the trilogy. The final story, "Ideology", is the most like Coffin Joe's film and easily the best. Its full of his standard philosophical ramblings and presents a catalog of depravities that seems to foreshadow his masterpiece "Awakening of the Beast" by two years.

The thing that I wonder about Coffin Joe is if the surrealism in his films is intended or not. Despite never being actually frightening, his bizarre and unique style resembles a half remembered fever dream nightmare. "The Strange World of Coffin Joe" is a very strange world indeed, and psychotronic buffs are recommended to get into it. This isn't the best starting place for the man, but if you've seen his three most famous films (the ones commercially available in this country) and enjoyed them, you'll enjoy this. (6/10)
