Director Sergio Sollima said on the DVD extras of the movie that it was in fact Ennio Morricone that scored the music for the film. Sergio Sollima said Morricone's conductor Bruno Nicolai got the credit probably because Morricone was tied up at another studio at the time and didn't want any trouble.

This sequel came to be made due to the extreme popularity of the character Cuchillo Sanchez in the film The Big Gundown, despite Cuchillo not being the lead in that film. Director Sergio Sollima said in an interview the reason for this is because the first time in Western film history we had a character that was a Mexican peon, a "dreamer" and a "thief", yet likable at the same time.
