Nothing extraordinary, but a fun little picture with a nice message towards the end
19 September 2007 | by (Worcester, MA) – See all my reviews

Considering the fact I'd never heard about the film beforehand and didn't exactly have high expectations from the plot description, I was quite pleasantly surprised by "The Bamboo Saucer". It isn't a cinematic masterpiece by any means, but its quite enjoyable and ambitious for what it is. Its a nice blend of serious science fiction, a message movie, and an exciting adventure story. The action sequences, while far and few between, are competently directed and generate a degree of tension. Also, the film has a message about international cooperation that was quite rare in films at the time. In the end, the Americans and the Russians have to learn to work together.

The film isn't flawless however. Most of the acting is very wooden and the characters, while likable, aren't exactly well-rounded individuals. Also, the pace can feel a bit sluggish at times and overall a good fifteen or twenty minutes could've been trimmed (espescially the stuff towards the beginning, the film seems to lose a central focus at times). Plus, there's a bit too many deus-ex-machinas in the film to gain a sort of credibility. Ultimately, these flaws don't detract from the final product. "The Bamboo Saucer" is a nice little picture thats perfect for unassuming rainy day watching. (7/10)
