No, Cam and Mitch on 'Modern Family' are not 'the gay equivalent of blackface'

1 hour ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Actor Tuc Watkins, best known for his role as David Vickers on "One Life to Live" and Bob Hunter on "Desperate Housewives," took to his Facebook page to post about Cam and Mitch, the gay couple on "Modern Family" played by Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson.  "Hmm. I think 'Modern Family' is clever, hilarious, even terrifically subtle at times," he posted. "But, for the most part, I have a hard time laughing at the gay guys. In fact, I kinda cringe. It feels a little bit like the gay equivalent of 'blackface.' It doesn’t feel 'modern' at all... Sure, people come in all shapes, sizes, etc. So why are we fed such 80s stereotypes every week?" Watkins, who joined "One Life to Live" in 1994, came out as gay in 2013. Jesse Tyler Ferguson responded to his post with his own feelings about Cam and Mitch. Sorry you feel that way Tuc. »

Where the heck has this gal been? Former soap queen and Broadway baby Catherine Hickland hasn't been seen on our TV screens since One Life to Live ended its run on ABC three years ago — and that's fine by her! The much-missed, eternally effervescent beauty is fully busy these days as a cosmetics mogul, life coach, motivational speaker and hypnotherapist. She's now married to producer Todd Fisher, son of Debbie Reynolds and the late Eddie Fisher. (Yep, that makes her Princess Leia's sister-in-law!). And she has joined forces with 99-year-old wunderkind writer Fern Underwood on the just-published Cat and Fern's Excellent God Adventure: Daily Inspirations for 365 Days of Heaven on Earth. Co-written by bestselling author and soap scribe Lindsay Harrison (The Young and the Restless, Venice) and with a forward by Reynolds, the book is available through both Amazon.com and catandfern.com. Auerbach helped evolve daytime dramas from short, 15-minute live broadcasts to hourlong taped productions.

Auerbach directed the likes of Warren Beatty, Dana Delany, Christopher Reeve, Roy Scheider, Jon Voight and Jessica Walter during the show’s nearly three decade run.

Elaine Stritch’s Final Days: ‘I Miss Me Too’

13 November 2014 9:33 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

If only Elaine Stritch could have secretly attended her own funeral like Tom Sawyer, she would have witnessed a standing ovation.

In early 2013, the legendary Broadway star abandoned her longtime home of New York for Birmingham, Mich., where she underwent surgery a year later for stomach cancer, a diagnosis she never publicly revealed. After she died in July at 89, she was buried at a small service in Chicago alongside her husband, the actor John Bay.

The priest delivered an unconventional eulogy, especially when he started to warble “I Feel Pretty,” one of her signature covers from “West Side Story.” He ended his remarks by asking the attendees to give Stritch a round of applause. “We stood up and clapped,” recalls Chiemi Karasawa, the director of “Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me,” who spent two years trailing—and later befriending—the grand dame. “He wanted us to acknowledge her as a performer, because »

Ty Simpkins, at the young age of 13, is in high demand for two of Hollywood’s biggest film franchises.

Ty Simpkins In 'Iron Man,' 'Jurassic Park'

Simpkins starred in Iron Man 3 alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Harley Keener, a character that’s more or less a younger version of Tony Stark. Marvel has locked Simpkins into a deal in which they have priority for three sequels in the franchise.

For Jurassic World, which is currently in postproduction, Ty was tapped to play Gray. For the part, the established young actor earned a $200,000 base salary and stands to make another $125,000 if the film does well at the box office, reported TMZ. One of last year’s breakout sitcoms was Fox’s cop comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and for good reason: it’s one of the funniest shows out there. I already published my review, as well as an interview with Tambor, and now I have an interview with the show’s creator, “Six Feet Under” and “United States of Tara” veteran Jill Soloway. It’s a deep dive into the world of trans politics — including the question of whether it’s ideal to have a cis male (aka someone born a man) like Tambor playing this role — how Soloway’s professional past and family history shaped the series, the prospect of people watching all 10 episodes at once, and more. As I said in my review, it may take me a little time to finish the rest of the season, given what a busy »
