Storyline

The Spindrift, a sub-oribital spaceship on a flight from Los Angeles to London, became lost when it passed through a strange cloud in the ship's orbit around Earth. It landed on an alternate Earth-type planet, where the inhabitants were roughly twelve times the size of the Spindrift's passengers. Our heroes include the ship's captain (Steve Burton), co-pilot (Dan) and stewardess (Betty); an arrogant engineer (Mark); a sexy jet-setter (Valerie); a young boy (Barry) and his dog Chipper; and a mysterious rogue known as Commander Fitzhugh. Together they battle the planet's totalitarian government, try to avoid capture, and attempt to repair the Spindrift so they can get back home. Written by Marty McKee <mmckee@wkio.com>

Trivia

Although the series ran for two years (1968 thru 1970), the first 12 episodes were filmed in the summer and fall of 1967 to meet the original planned start of the series which would have been January, 1968. The network was originally planning to use "Giants" as a mid-season replacement show. Since nothing needed replacing on their schedule, the series's premiere date was pushed back to Fall 1968 where it inevitably replaced Irwin Allen's "Voyage" series on the schedule. The 1967 start of the series' filming helps explain the difference in appearance of actor Stephen Arngrim from year one to year two, because in actuality THREE years have transpired over the course of the series 51 episodes! Goofs

In the first episode, the Spindrift departed from New York on its flight to London. In later episodes, the departing city is changed to Los Angeles. See more »

Greatest Sci Fi Series ever
13 February 2001 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Even though it lasted only two seasons and 51 episodes Land of the Giants is in my opinion the best sci fi series ever produced. Once a week you were with seven stranded castaways...but not on any island...on a hositle giant earth-like planet. Gary Conway and Deanna Lund are especially great in the roles of Steve and Valerie.
