Very charming and enjoyable to fans of 60s kitsch
14 February 2007 | by (Worcester, MA) – See all my reviews

"Work Is a 4-Letter Word" isn't classic comedy, but is very charming and enjoyable to fans of 60s kitsch. It certainly deserves more notice than it has received, especially when taken into consideration how much of a cult classic David Warner's other psychedelic film "Morgan" is. As a comedy, its only partially successful. Peter Hall's comedic timing and pacing are absolutely poor and with this could've been a better film with a more skilled director. Fortunately, David Warner is such a hilarious screen presence when he needs to be that some potentially flat jokes become amusing.

The film will probably be mostly of interest because it deals with the topic of hallucinogenic mushrooms. How much you enjoy it may depend on substance (legal or illegal) intake. This is another case where the presentation of drug use is so inaccurate it becomes entertaining to those who know better. Those uninterested in dated camp will most likely find little of value here. However, psychotronic buffs (such as myself) will love it. Its worth the steep bootleg price to get a copy of it. Special mention goes to the theme song which is bound to get stuck in your head for days. (7/10)
