In the town of Hard Times, a stranger rides in and terrorizes the small settlement. He kills a number of townsfolk, including Fee, the town's founder. Mayor Will Blue fails to stand up to the man, who rapes saloon whore Molly and burns down the town. Blue promises to rebuild the town after the stranger rides on, but the townsfolk give up and leave. A wagon load of prostitutes led by "entrepeneur" Zar shows up and together with Blue, they rebuild the town. But Molly's desire for revenge and her anger at Blue for not protecting her eat at her, and Blue promises that things will be different when the stranger returns. And return he does. Henry Fonda having a hard time
15 January 2002 | by (Solvesborg, Sweden) – See all my reviews

The title of this flick and town, where it is all happening, says it all. I don't know how serious one is to take it all considering how the people (incredibly pacifistic) act when a man rides into this small society and start taking lives, but I thought it was great and Fonda as usual convincing as the 'sheriff' (or Mayor) of Hard Times.

It all starts with Aldo Ray (as Man from Bodie) riding into town a dark and windy night and things take off from there.

I like Warren Oates as Deputy Marshal Leo Jenks, Denver Pyle as stage driver and Keenan Wynn as Zar. The story is also very unusual but great and the loneliness of the people is remarkable. Isolated but for the stage coach coming into town twice a month or so. Recommended to all who likes to see an unusual western with struggling people and their lives in the American desert in the 1800th century.
