Popular singer knifed to death and no shortage of suspects
14 January 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Noz" (1967) aka "The Knife" is a Yugoslavian crime-mystery story. I watched a copy running 78 minutes, not 85. There were a couple of rough transitions that I assume mark edits, but the story didn't suffer as far as I can tell.

This is a very enjoyable police procedural in black and white that I highly recommend. It has a mood that is fresh, sort of New Wave. The music score includes some jazz and classical-type cues that fit nicely. Also, included is a pop song sung by the murder victim in a flashback. The murder victim is found by his lover. Then, as the two detectives investigate, we find that his public image is far from his private life. The two cops look upon the people they encounter with a strain of humor and cynicism that we as viewers detect, but they are completely professional in their work. The story doesn't go into their private lives or attempt to build their characters, but we still have a feeling for the two men, who are quite different. At least four persons become suspects, some of whom were angry enough to make public threats. These are given interesting character development, and this enriches the story greatly. It is all woven together very skillfully. One wonders what other such gems might have been produced in a cinema that is so far out of the spotlight as Yugoslavia in 1967. Merely seeing the streets of Belgrade (I believe) in one chase scene is a treat.

The movie might possibly be classifiable as neo-noir due to being a crime movie in black and white that has this way of poking cynical fun at some of the characters by revealing their idiosyncrasies.

The cast is uniformly capable. The story moves along nicely. The mystery is kept alive until near the end. The directing is quick and direct. It doesn't miss a beat.
