Never come between a child and their non-human best friend.
mark.waltz2 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Through the intense narration of Frank DeKova, the story of young native Tutavina is documented, a predictable but touching drama about the young eagle he protects and saves from being utilized as a religious sacrifice, accused of betraying his tribe and basically made an outcast. The jealousies of the other boys and their violent stoning attempt as he leaves adds to the sadness of the story, and the "real life true story" extended short from Disney truly becomes an amazing account of the determination to survive under the worst of odds. The cleverness of young Tutavina is shown several times, a glimpse into the determination he has to make it through those days when he is starving, walking through the dangerous beauty of the desert sun, at one point walking by a giant slab of rock that looks like a dark phantom staring down on him.

These four reel Disney additions to their matinee lineups were staples of movie theaters for decades, beautifully filmed and often just as good (or even better) than the feature. There's no time for silliness in these docudramas, and yet, there's time for sentiment as documented when the eagle finds the ailing boy just as a vulture begins stalking him. You can see why people often can find the power of God through the actions of wild animals and that makes this touching, especially when the eagle subtly teaches Tutavina how to hunt. The background is breathtaking, giving the impression that they were filming in the Grand Canyon, with shots of other wild life including some adorable wolf cubs that Tutavina encounters before their mother shows up, once again protected by the mighty majestic eagle. The young actor playing Tutavina never speaks, but he has charm for sure. Definitely worth a search for its timeless tale!

Would love to see it again!

As the other reviewer commented, I would love to see this again. I saw it in the theater as an opening short to another Disney film in the late sixties. I forget which film that was, but I certainly remember this one. I do recall seeing this movie on the Sunday evening broadcast of "The Wonderful World of Disney" at least twice after having seen it in the theater. The boy's name is Tutuvina (not sure if I spelled it correctly) and the movie was/is very enjoyable. I would love to see it again!

I found a copy of this wonderful movie!
runningwhitedeer4 February 2008
I read so many comments that I, too, shared about remembering this movie and wanting so badly to see it again but I didn't know the name of the movie. Thankfully, because of doing a search and finding the title on this site, I read the comments left here and realized that this was the movie I remembered. I then did a search and did find the movie and was so thrilled to be able to watch the movie once more 40 years later. Because of this site and your comments, you helped me and so I want to thank all of you. I want to share how I was able to find this movie for all of you who were looking for a copy as well. It was on the VHS version of Wonderful World of Disney's "Call it Courage" which contained 2 movies, the second one being "The Legend of the Boy and the Eagle." It touched me now as much as it did 40 years ago and now I own my own copy of it. I think it is only available on VHS. I found it on ebay and I have seen several copies of it there. Enjoy it, I know I did!

It is a wonderful story about the love of a boy and the eagle he took care of. When it was time to sacrifice the eagle, the boy set the eagle free because he couldn't allow it to be killed. After the boy was forced to leave the tribe for punishment after freeing the eagle, the eagle, too, saved the boy's life and more than that, taught him how to survive. The closeness that the boy and the eagle shared in the wilderness was so moving and the filming was really remarkable. What a wonderful era this was. I have never seen anything come even close to this movie!

Phantastic Movie!!!
paputzi4 February 2005
I have seen this movie when I was about 7 years old - which was 33 years ago - and I never forgot this movie! I was deeply touched and moved by the brave little boy and the beautiful eagle. And I just couldn't believe it when he turned into an eagle just when everyone in the theater thought he was going to die...

My sister was in the movie with me and I asked her recently if she remembered the movie we saw with the boy and the eagle and she said she remembered it like we saw it only yesterday. So it isn't just me.

This movie is a MUST SEE !!!

You will never forget it - just like my sister and me...

Frank, honest, simple, engrossing
I_Ailurophile17 March 2022
I appreciate the earnest simplicity of this movie. The soundtrack is defined almost exclusively by Franklyn Marks' duly varied score, and by Frank DeKova's narration, with only sparing audio that was collected alongside the film footage. 'The legend of the boy and the eagle' almost feels like a logical extension of the techniques of the silent era, with DeKova's voice substituted for the plain text of intertitles that would relate essential plot between scenes. As someone who absolutely treasures silent films, this can only be a point in this feature's favor, and perhaps it's crucial in this specific instance. There is no cinematic embellishment here: the picture presents as relating a Hopi legend, and so what we plainly see before us are beautiful landscapes, video of wildlife, and depictions of the lifestyle and tools of a culture that exists in balanced harmony with the natural world. There are no narrative hooks or twists, no stylized dialogue or character interactions, no special effects - only the most fundamental of direction and editing, arrangement of scenes, and drama and action in accordance with the uncomplicated essence of the title.

With Disney being best known for churning out animated features and various shows appealing to modern youth, it's easy to forget or overlook the vast wealth of live-action titles they produced for several decades that haven't had the same level of attention. This is most certainly one of them, and it falls neatly within the company of features that centered nature to one extent or another; even as the focus is on the story, in the visuals and in DeKova's descriptions we're treated to honest examination of the world around us. Yet while the approach here to film-making and storytelling may be unfamiliar or even off-putting to some audiences, it's not forced, contrived, or hokey - for whatever heavy- or ham-handedness one may arguably perceive at times, 'The legend of the boy and the eagle' is a gratifyingly frank and sincere picture. At risk of overusing a root word, the style here can only be described as naturalistic; one gets a sense that each passing moment is staged only insofar as producers set the pieces in motion to capture certain desired shots, and otherwise each scene and the narrative at large are precisely how this sequence of events would play out, no more and no less. With that, there's a grace and ease to it all that is a great pleasure to watch as a viewer.

That this lacks the flourishes and grandiosity of any major motion picture may surely be a turn off for some. As far as I'm concerned, however, that's exactly what makes it so terrific. The bare candor of the production, the outright beauty of the cinematography, and the endearing, unadorned truthfulness of the small narrative all stir together into an enticing, fluid, quietly captivating viewing experience. It may not appeal to all moviegoers, but so it is for the medium at large. For my part, I think 'The legend of the boy and the eagle' is a superbly well made, capably entertaining slice of cinema that's worth more than the mere 50 minutes it takes to watch, and boasts more value than many titles that are far longer. One maybe doesn't need to go out of their way to watch this, but if you have the opportunity, it's well worth one's while to do so.

Great Movie, wonderful story, very touching and memorable
mikescorpio6910 November 2007
I remembered seeing this movie when i was a kid one day on the wonderful world of Disney. This movie has been in my memory for over 30 years and I have been looking for it. I would have to say that out of all the kids movies I saw back then,, this one stuck out more than all of them and after only seeing it once, I really hoped I would get to see it again. The story and images of this movie have been burned into my memory. To this day, I never did see it after that day back in the 70s, in fact, I never remembered the title until an internet search earlier today disclosed it to me. I loved it and want my kids to see it.Does anybody know where I can find it?

I just can't believe this!
caruz21 September 2006
I've been trying to remember details of the movie for years! I've been talking with almost every guy I know of my age for decades in the attempt to recover information about this masterpiece. None seemed to remember. I just remember that name "tutubina" and that last scene when he jumps off the cliff and turns into a eagle (does he?)and the fact that i started crying and feeling totally unified with that Indian kid. I've tried several web-searches in the recent years but I couldn't get nothing. Yesterday night I was talking about that with a friend a this morning before leaving I typed hopelessly "tutubuna" on the engine another time. But I made a mistake and I typed Tutuvina!!! Please help me if you know where to buy or get the movie. Forgive my English. Thank you.

short film
mcaram18 May 2006
Oh, the sixties. There were some interesting films. I was more of a movie goer then. I now enjoy renting movies and relaxing in my home rather than going to the theater. I also saw this short film, " The Legend of the Boy and the Eagle". I have been searching for this film for years. It was truly inspiring. Surprisingly, I was finally able to gather more information from your site. Thank You........ I'm surprised to find out that this short film was an opening for a Disney picture. I too did not remember the Disney film. I did not even remember that it was an opening film for Disney. I truly wish they would show this on TV sometime. I wonder if Disey holds the rights to this film? Is it available on DVD? This is a must see for all generations!!!

Where, oh where is this movie now?
lala-8249719 August 2020
I saw it as pre Pippi Longstocking movie in the cinema. (those were the days when you got a full movie before the main event!) I was only little, about 8 years old, and I can honestly say it had a profound effect on my thinking and imagination. It was much more important to me than Pippi Longstocking. I wrote a novel not long ago, 'By the Icehawk's Feather' and that profound happiness and sense of mystery I remembered from that movie filtered though the story line. Life changing for a little girl then, would love to see it again. I'm surprised it's not being shown any more. I just found this site! https://www.truetvmovies.net/store/p6946/Walt_Disney's-The_Legend_of_the_Boy_and_the_Eagle_(1967)_Frank_DeKova,_Stanford_Lomakema_.html Haven't ordered yet, so no idea if it works.

A beautiful native American story!
myfunstuff30 March 2005
I absolutely LOVE this movie and would really like to have it someday. It's just a fascinating legend about an eagle who wears a Turquoise necklace, I loved it and would like to see it again! I don't remember too much about it, but that a Native American boy lives in a nice village with his family, and I don't remember what happens, but he is supposed to go out to the wilderness alone. His sister packs him some food and he goes. While he's out there, some other Indian boys come running out and put some feathers on him, and he turns into an eagle. The legend says that if you ever see an eagle wearing a Turquoise necklace, it is the boy. I was always fascinated with legends, particularly Native American legends and I would love to see this released someday to a DVD, PLEASE RELEASE IT, whoever's concerned!

Legend of the boy and the eagle - short movie preceding the Jungle Book (NL)
cbossink21 July 2006
I've also been looking to find this movie for quite some time, and how great it would be to find it on DVD...

I saw this movie when I was about 6 years old, in the Netherlands. And I was very impressed by it. It was shown before Walt Disney's JUNGLE BOOK!

What I remember of this movie is fragmented. I remember that an Indian boy was friends with an eagle. This impressed me very much. For some reason he was thrown out of his village (did not grasp the reason for this). When other boys threw stones at him, he climbed a rock and jumped off. At that time he turned into an eagle and flew away with his eagle friend. As an eagle he was still wearing his turquoise necklace.

the best movie i have ever seen that made a lasting impression
deniselacey200022 May 2005
This movie was great and I would like to buy it.The boy goes with his grandfather to catch a young eagle. the boy has to feed and care for the eagle until it is old enough to be sacrificed for the crops. the boy saves the eagle from being killed and runs away from the tribe. The eagle helps feed him by catching a duck from a small pond the boy scares up. Later the boy shoots a deer that a bully kid was claiming because their arrows were marked very close the same. Only until they check the thickness of the red lines do they determine who actually got the deer. But this was unfortunate because it made the other boys even crueler to him,and at the end he is being chased up onto a cliff but when you think he will fall off his pure love for the eagle transforms him into a golden eagle with only a necklace as a reminder of who he was. Please if anyone knows where I can buy this movie let me know.I haven't seen it for over 30 years, but still remember parts of the movie.deniselacey2000@yahoo.com

Great memories of this movie
vikingscyth23 September 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Man, I loved this movie! This really takes me back to when I was a kid. These were the days when the teachers still showed classroom films on reel-to-real and if you were good, they would rewind the movie slowly so you could watch it play backward. I still remember one of the opening lines...."Tutazema was his name, and he was an Orphan. He lived with his sister so and so in the village." This is a great movie for kids and as enduring as the red balloon. At the end the other Indian boys in the village attach the feathers to Tutazema and he becomes an eagle himself. He gets to live the way he always wanted to. He gets to soar the heavens.

The Legend of the Boy and the Eagle
ssb-178 August 2008
I just found the IMDb and searched this film and I was moved almost to tears by the comments of all the people who saw this film as I did when 6 or so years old in 1967?. I saw it before the Jungle Book so I was Eagle Boy for a few hours and then Mowgli for the next year. I burst into tears at the cinema when the boy turned into the Eagle and always wanted to see the film again. When we got home we had a Roast chicken dinner and I got the wish bone and guess who I wished to be? My dad then said 'I bet you wished to be an Eagle' and of course we all know that wishes are broken if someone guesses so more tears and a little resentment to this day for not being able to fly away...

Need to purchase DVD of this movie
dolly56126 December 2006
My son was 7 years old when he saw this movie, he is now on a Russian Fishing vessel and said that the movie he was most impressed with and that has lingered in his mind all of these 39 years is the movie of The Legend of the Boy and the Eagle. He has asked if it were possible for me to get this for him. I am sure that a lot of things go through his head as he has only 3 hours of daylight and he has been on this ship for 3 months and will have 3 more months before his contract expires. Since we have Indian blood he connects to this movie. On January 27th he will turn 47 years old and I would like to be able to obtain this movie for him. He lives in Thailand and has been a commercial fisherman for the past 17 years and as we all know this is one of the most dangerous jobs. Can you help me obtain this movie? Thanking you in advance, Dolly Crout-Soto, Deerfield Beach, FL

A beautiful, rare film, you must find and watch!
reddragonhero1722 December 2022
I remember first seeing this in 4th grade class, which was befitting since part of the curriculum was studying about Native Americans. I was entranced by this film the first time I saw it, with it's great story and cinematography. For many years, I searched for this, but was unable to find it in libraries or video stores. Only recently thanks to Youtube, I was able to see it again, and it has aged beautifully. The story of a boy who's only friend is an eagle that must be sacrificed to appease the gods of a Hopi tribe. The boy defies tradition to save her, even if that gets him expelled from the village. Now on his own, he must struggle to survive with only his hunting skills and only companion his eagle, but sooner or later he must decide whether to return to the village or stay in the wild. Which one will he choose? That is for you to find out. The beautiful cinematography plus the wonderful narration without any dialogue make this story a cut above, yet it is quite hard to find nowadays. Disney doesn't have a good history with Native Americans, yet this one remains very respectful. Forget about Peter Pan's stereotyping and the historical inaccuracy of Pocahontas, this is the real deal. I won't reveal the ending but I'll say it is very beautiful.
