Storyline

New York tourist Tony Curtis falls asleep on a Southern California beach on his first night in the West and wakes up to The New Phantasmagoria--catamarans, surfers (including a dog), bodybuilders, acrobats, motorcycle chicken races, a nut fishing in the shallows . . . and Sharon Tate as a skydiver named Malibu who gives Curtis the rapture of artificial respiration when he is conked on the head by a flying surfboard. This is the '60s American Dream: youth and beauty and money and sex in Southern California. Go west, all men. Written by alfiehitchie

Don't Make Waves (1967)
10 February 2016 | by (Greece) – See all my reviews

The director of this movie is Alexander Mackendrick and this was his last picture. In this film he employs Tony Curtis in his usual but eventful role within a sex comedy of the sixties in America. Alexander Mackendrick and Tony Curtis have worked before in the brilliant "Sweet Smell Of Success" (1957). In that 1957 film, along with the acting talent of Burt Lancaster and the co-writing skills of Clifford Odets and Ernest Lehman, we were all graced with a unique and bold film that shed light into the brutal business world of any kind.

In this 1967 film, apart from Tony Curtis, there are many other stars who have enough star power and present in particular well- crafted characters for the film to take off. Unfortunately, the film did not manage to do so at the box-office. The film was based on the novel Muscle Beach by Ira Wallach and was a an effort to present a usual sex comedy, a type that was very popular in America during the mid sixties, through a unpretentious way of satirizing the morals and ethics of America. The film did not try to take a stab at the muscle beach culture, instead it tried to pose the sallowness and empty vanity of the other part of Californian America that proves to be more pitiful when compared to the easy target of body building oriented people.

We see those cliché attacks towards body builders, vanity-oriented women and corporate suits through our main character and we are enjoying his own personal need to manipulate his surroundings and reach his main goal which is nothing more than a carnal realization of a sex fantasy. That sex fantasy is all well understood because it is based on the stunning looks of Sharon Tate, one of the most beautiful women that graced the film industry. Tony Curtis manages to make us follow him through his devious efforts and we all want to see him succeed. Without even knowing, we all project our inner vanity in his character and we root for him. Tony Curtis builds an empty world that crumbles mostly inside of him. We witness this crumbling in its most manifested way where the unexamined course towards the American dream (california style) is bound to face the mudslides that always hide around the corner of a swallow way of living.

Overall, even though most people did not appreciate this unusual and subtle satire, this picture stands as a pleasurable experience for people who wish to see a beach sex comedy movie that takes an inward stand against empty and self gratifying meanings of life.
