Summaries

  • To get his big break, a singing matador must win over the most beautiful and most elusive woman in all of Barcelona, in only three days.
  • Unsuccessful singing bullfighter Juan arrives in Barcelona to try his luck in a big town. He finally persuades a devious local impresario to book him, but only on the condition that Juan first manages to spend an evening with Olimpia, a "shrewd merciless beauty" who seems effortlessly to collect apartments and Maserati sports cars while leaving a trail of broken hearts behind her. Juan approaches the challenge by pretending to her he is an emissary for a rich count.—Jeremy Perkins {J-26}
  • Juan Bautista, a poor, retired matador, that retirement due solely to not being very good at it, has just arrived in Barcelona in an effort to reinvent himself as the first singing matador. He thinks he has made the right connection when he meets impresario Francisco Carbonell at a neighborhood café run by Eugenio Gomez. In not impressing Carbonell with his act, Bautista makes it his mission to hound Carbonell until he relents. In turn, Carbonell thinks he has a way to kill many birds with one stone in offering Bautista what he will not know is a seemingly impossible challenge. Carbonell will give Bautista a one week contract to perform at his theater for 2,000 pesetas if and only if he is able to "conquer" Olimpia Segura, a proverbial man-eater, within three days. Using her feminine wiles, the beautiful Olimpia is able to string mostly wealthy men along to get out of them what she wants, only to chew them up and spit them out, with many coming back for more if she gives them even a glimmer of hope, she, in the end, having given up nothing of herself except her time. A café regular, Pepe Gamazo, is a total wreck of a man now in his dealings with Olimpia. With Eugenio as an impartial set of eyes, Carbonell will know if Bautista has fulfilled the criteria of the challenge if they can see that Bautista is with Olimpia in her apartment, the window of which can been seen from the café, with the lights off for at least one hour. With a plan in hand, Bautista is able to dangle a carrot in front of Olimpia at least to infiltrate her life. What happens is affected by Olimpia being in the midst of stringing along her latest victim, confident and suave Carlos Matabosch, the wealthy owner of his own tractor company.—Huggo
