Raj Singh is the nephew and heir apparent of multi-millionaire J.J. Singh. J.J. Singh has to travel worldwide for business purposes, and he asks Raj to join him in Tokyo. An employee, Pran, who has been asked to take care of Raj's travel needs, decides to sabotage this trip in order to embarrass Raj. When Raj lands at Tokyo, he misses his uncle, who has had a change in plans, and is now in Europe. Raj must re-book his flight to go to Europe. Raj finds that he has no money for an air-ticket, or to go anywhere. All he has is $8 American dollars, which will not even be able to buy him a meal in Japan, leave alone travel anywhere. Trivia

Only four 70mm prints of Around the World were released initially: one for Delhi, one for Uttar Pradesh and two for Bombay-Maharashtra. The same 70mm print was screened at two cinema halls in Delhi, which had different show timings. It would be taken back and forth between the two halls in a car. It was exactly the same with India's second 70mm film, Sholay. See more »

around the world in eight dollars.....
4 May 2014 | by (Nepal) – See all my reviews

"Around the World" starts with a youth set to go around the world with a mere 8 dollars in his pocket and is left stranded in Tokyo. The beginning seems like a start of a very different genre for a 60s classic. But soon the film comes into a familiar league of a general 60s movie with the chit-chats of the hero and heroine and a regular bad guy played by Pran. The weakness of the story is further aggravated by the lack of an interesting plot, incoherence in storytelling and repetition of boring situations. In contrary to the title of the movie, very few countries have been shown in the movie. But owing to the time and period of the film, the film deserves an attention for the endeavor made in the techniques of the film (the film was the first 70mm technicolor movie of India) like the foreign locations shot and few nice songs among few forgettable tunes. Anyway, if you're a fan of Raj Kapoor, you won't regret watching it.
