ufo's, dinosuars, time warp weapons and avillian bent on enslaving mankind..sounds like a pensoil commercial! great show., 30 April 2002
Author: ROOK TAMURA (Literaryshootist)

SPACE GIANTS had several factors working for it. The parts that led to it's success were the martial arts action, robots, JACK FINNEY style stories and the supernatural and ufo folklore woven into the show. Years ahead of it's time SPACE GIANTS proved to be more than a godzilla clone. The show wove into it's story lines ufo's and the men in black myth. Popular in japan and later in exports, it spawned a animated series. SPACE GIANTS is also a fantasy program which was intermeshed with the modren day setting. The program focused on a alien invasion by a supernatural space alien race who had among other things time weapons. The woman who played the photographer LIZ went on to be in other shows and films and later japanese publishing.

Author: rochey50 (rochey50@aol.com) from USA

I was a big fan of this show back then. I was hoping somebody could help me by sending info regarding this show. I would like to know if there is a website for it. I would like to know if there is a way to get old shows on DVD. I have seen info on ebay but it wasn't very specific. In fact, it was kind of vague. My kids would like this kind of show. I would like to see these again since it brings back some good memories of the past. There were other shows at this time like Ultraman and Speed Racer. These were great to watch too. I'm hoping someone out there can be a big help with this. Hope to hear from somebody soon!!!!!! I know I cant be the only one out there that would like this info. Please help!!!!! Rochey50

a interesting tv show that I loved as a kid., 24 October 2001
Author: UNISOM

WTBS started running this around 1979. The program was purchased in syndication for cheap around the time Japanese tv shows and animation such as BATTLE OF THE PLANETS and STAR BLAZERS hit US airwaves after syndication deals with such firms as Claster and Sandy Frank etc. Turner ran this series which was a GODZILLA/RODAN style robot space opera mixing kung fu, fantasy, espionage, and science fiction in adventure show aimed at kids and young adults. The program was not a ratings bomb and fired well on cable in a era where you had a different approach to afternoon broadcasting (pre talk show era). Some have said the program mixed wiccan legends like THE FACE OR OLD MAN OR WOMAN IN THE WOODS with symbolism in a robotic battle of good and evil. The program was family oriented science fiction that was almost 15 years old when it hit America on mass in many different tv markets. The series cost effective faired well but is not on video or in release on tv yet. If you liked Godzilla but like a little "tounge in cheek" humor this show will be up your alley.

Schlock or not beauty is in the eye of the syndicator! A fun show!, 27 April 2002
Author: ROOK TAMURA (Literaryshootist)

SPACE GIANTS was a tv series which lasted 52 episodes, among the fans were SQUEEKY FROMME. SPACE GIANTS was a action adventure show on the TOHO pattern. The series was science fiction, horror, espionage with the standard fights over a city consiting of robots and aliens (usually actors in suits). This series was prior to shows which became popular in the 1990's like POWER RANGERS. SPACE GIANTS seemingly draws on black magic mythology in a tounge and cheek tale of a alien invasion bent on taking over the world. The black magic motifs of this series are tame and alluded to seemingly. Instead of rampaging hordes of demons from old woods/chrisitan spiritualism we have aliens bent on world conquest with starships and mind powers! The series will appeal to fans of SONNY CHIBA films and japanese cinema and television. In the 1970's men like TED TURNER who was a advertiser started tv outfits like WTBS. Turner was at that time a cable tv marketing whiz with a top notch sales staff in georgia got the rights to air this show. WTBS aired this program up until about 1983 and it was a ratings success in the time slots following getting out of school. SPACE GIANTS hit america in a era when second run shows of this nature could garner a audience and thus advertiser revenue. Afternoon kids programming today is ancient history thanks to 1990's government regulations impositioning huge finesfor over advertising, and station abuse of FCC guidelines. TV stations would like to air "safe shows" like OPRAH which are not subject to these rules. This show was released in a era which no such FCC restrictions existed and as a boy was fuel for a young imagination. The series strength was the mixture of martial arts, supernatural battles and science fiction espionage in a tale of alien attack. SPACE GIANTS was played alot in the USA due to the marketability and it's tie to a tried and true broadcast format; the GODZILLA/RODAN genre or style progamming. Hugely popular it was aired on cable by WTBS and in other markets in the 1970's and 1980's. The shows detractors have called this "jap crap" or "dubbed cheese" as a kid you don't long for Andie McDowell in HARRISONS FLOWERS..you longed for EDITH HANSON in this robot adventure show! Children and some college students were attracted to the theme of robots, invasion, and "buster crabbish" daring do.

A menace from space, only a fledgling army of robots and tv writers can save mankind!, 24 March 2002
Author: ROOK TAMURA (Literaryshootist)

SPACE GIANTS rode the crest of a wave GODZILLA themed media into the united states in the 1970's. Usually seen in the DUBBED version, this program was a rip on witchcraft and american spy caper films. The series was science fiction and centered on a small faction of robots and their allies who battle to save mankind from a alien invasion of supernatural porportions. Quite wisley TURNER COMMUNICATIONS, bought tv rights to air this show on SUPERSTATION chanel WTBS in atlanta which had at that time market cable coverage in 75- 90 percent of the USA. The show was released in a era when second run syndicated shows of this nature and those like STAR TREK went cheap and were often public in the after school 3pm-6pm time bracket or on weekends. The shows strength was the appeal with college students and children and it's enemy imposter supernatural BATTLE OF THE BULGE motif. The show can best be described a sa supernatural martial arts action adventure science fiction piece. The show also draws on germania occult myths seemingly in this tale of planet earth under attack. Like most japanese shows there is a fight involving two actors in suits over a decimated model of a japanese city. ONe thing I find facinating about this show is the portrayl of the american military in this program. The producers portray the americans as easily killed and japan has to "go it alone" against a invasion. This is consistent with GODZILLA films featuring a japanese military that is post war yet is not run by incompetants. The producers of this series destroy japan with waves of space monsters but not the nations pride. The series is a interesting mesh of spy film noir and supernatural science fiction. One refreshing thing is the series refusal to take itself too seriously. A hit in syndication in the usa up unitl the mid 1980's.

a pre X FILES UFO invasion story, 20 July 2002
Author: Turgen Mcalister

SPACE GIANTS combines several story styles in it's recipe for syndicated success in the 1970's and 1980's. With similar production values to LAND OF THE GIANTS, SPACE GIANTS was released in the united staqtes to success in syndication. The program meshes spirtiaulism, the UFO folklore, and a tale of spy and invasion intruige to tell it's story line which also invovled GODZILLA sized hijinks. Fun and never taking itself too seriously SPACE GIANTS was a enjoyable view for families and college students. Before POWER RANGERS hit america this program used martial arts and robots and aliens to garner a audience of afterschool fans. The show was sort of a program that followed the traditions of the 1930's serial.

This Show..Rocked!, 26 April 2003

Okay I will admit, after watching "Space Giants" as a child, I BEGGED my parents for a whistle. Why? To call Goldar, Sylvar or the little boy that turned into a rocket whenever I got into trouble, of course!

This was second only to my love of "Ultra Man" and what I write now, is only from a five year old's memory of watching this on tv in New York. You see they showed different things on Channel 11 before Yankees Baseball in the summer. My father, being a baseball-a-holic was on every Yankees and Mets televised game. For us, the kids, they would show "Thunderbirds", the "super-marionnette" puppets (yikes!!) or this, the wonderful..Space Giants.

I liked this show as a child. They didn't show many installments in America but (Spoilers possible) what this was about was three Giants/Robots that could be called to save the world from impending trouble from (there was ALWAYS trouble!).... as my mom constantly reminded me of when she walked into the room, "Men in rubber suits."

A little boy was given a whistle, if he blew it once, it would call a little boy who looked just like him and could change into a rocket. If the little boy blew the whistle twice it would call a woman in a silver suite, Sylvar, who could kick butt like nobody's business. But if there was REALLY big trouble, he could blow this special whistle three times and in came Goldar, the Giant who would fight all the monsters. Pretty cool. Godzilla had nothing on these guys.

If you can get a few copies of the series from the beginning, it would be better. I saw it dubbed in English. Alot of family fun. Go get a few copies and enjoy!

the 1960's tcv shows which became a station ad exec's best friend, 27 April 2002
Author: ROOK TAMURA (Literaryshootist)

WTBS had a well planned marketing strategy for this show in the 1970's and 1980's. The station aired station produced promos for the show and as most stations do sold air time to advertisers. The ad'son WTBS has always been nationally oriented. Turner at this time had WTBS on close to 100 percent oif the country at this time in the form of cable coverage. In the late 1970's his superstation carried this show which was popular amidst a wave of import shows from japan like the sandy frank redub...BATTLE OF THE PLANETS, godzilla films and toho style televised and filmed products. SPACE GIANTS, which was largely popular with boys was a mesh of the godzilla style with the martial arts craze which reached a zenith starting in 1973. SPACE GIANTS was also to it's credit and monetary success a "family friendly" show. During this era movie houses showed japanese action, science ficiton, and gangster films. This was the era of this shows marketability to advertisers. The key to the WTBS success was the promotional time turner employees gave the show which was aimed at adults and young males. The series was sold on a barter/cash black basis during a resurrgence in interest in USA usable japanese programming. Cash black is a term whcih denotes the station getting 100 percent of the advertising time and revenue. Barter is usually used on statiosn that split advertising time with the syndicator and has commercials on the show tape. Which ad plan is used is up to the station and the broadcast group which owns it. Station managers then use this to place a strategy over sales and what not. This is true of any show. SPACE GIANTS was a success not a flop for the investors and makers of this show. The series was not DYNASTY, yet in this era shows like this thrived on television.

A childhood favorite, 21 May 2003
Author: JK55092 (thanato5@aol.com) from Roanoke, VA

To be honest, I don't remember the details well enough to write a very in-depth review. But I can say that as a small child, I would have moved Heaven and Earth before missing an episode. I enjoyed this show more than anything I've watched before or since, so that ought to be worth something.

Best Series of my childhood, 10 September 2006
10/10
Author: blingnseattle from United States

So long I have wanted to see anything of this series again. The heroes Goldar, dad like; Silvar, mom like; and Gan ,boy like ;there was also a kid who called on them with special whistles, one for each hero They were robot-like aliens thats what they looked like anyhow that could turn into jets, the bads guy were awesome the way their costume turned from seemingly human filled into a oozing blob of a green pudding filled looked lots cooler than I described. My favorite episode was about this young boy who would dream bout a monster and then it would come to life. Oh what I wouldn't give to see an episode of my favorite childhood show...
