Arthur Hiller, Director of ‘Love Story,’ Dies at 92

Arthur Hiller, Director of ‘Love Story,’ Dies at 92
Canadian-born director Arthur Hiller, who spent more than a decade mostly working in television before a career in feature helming that included “Love Story,” “The Americanization of Emily” and comedy “Silver Streak,” died Wednesday. He was 92.

Love Story,” based on the bestseller by Erich Segal, was an enormous box office hit in 1970 and was nominated for seven Oscars, including best picture. Though many critics dismissed the movie as too sentimental, it is No. 9 on the AFI’s list of the most romantic films of all time.

Hiller served as president of the Directors Guild of America from 1989-93 and of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences from 1993-97. He received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the 2002 Academy Awards ceremony.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued a statement. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved friend Arthur Hiller,” said Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs.

Revenge Recap: Is [Spoiler] Dead? Plus: Let's Discuss That Tragic Kiss

Revenge Recap: Is [Spoiler] Dead? Plus: Let's Discuss That Tragic Kiss
If you thought Revenge was going to take things slow following the death of Malcolm Black, you clearly don’t know this show very well. Sunday’s episode — the last new hour until March 8, if you can believe it — reminded us just how chaotic life in the Hamptons can be, even without a psychotic killer on the loose.

Let’s start with Nolan and Louise’s wedding reception, an appropriately over-the-top affair which was nearly derailed when Emily used an ancient Japanese trick (or whatever) to help Louise remember she did kill her father, just as “Penelope Dreadful” revealed in last week’s episode.

Recap of Revenge Episode 14: Escape To Witch Mountain

This week's episode of "Revenge" was amazing for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to the fact that David now has a scruffy goatee (good god no), Victoria's found herself a new enemy, and -- most importantly -- Kim Richards guest starred. That's the Kim Richards, everyone's favorite turtle-obsessed reality star from "Real Housewives of Beverley Hills." We are not worthy. Of course there are plenty of other story lines from the episode that we can't wait to sink our teeth into, so check out our recap of "Revenge" right here, right now.

Emily Helps Unlock Louise's Memory, Remains Revengey While Doing So

Important news: Nolan is now a married man. Yep, this jaunty fellow tied the knot with Louise Ellis, and you know what that means: time to throw a party. Louise and Nolan might not be in love, but they love the idea of mixing business

Ten Tigon Tales of Terror

Although Hammer Films will always be associated with British horror, the studio did have stiff competition. Amicus specialised in the successful horror anthologies and Us counterparts American International Pictures established a permanent UK base in the mid sixties. Other smaller independents took their own bite from the cherry tree of horror with some success, the best known being Tigon Films.

Tigon has received some belated recognition in recent years. Andy Boot’s book on British horror Fragments of Fear devotes a chapter to the company while John Hamilton’s excellent book Beast in the Cellar covers the varied career of Tigon’s charismatic founder Tony Tenser.

Like Hammer’s Sir James Carreras, Tenser was one of the British Film Industry’s great entrepreneurs. Born in London to poor Lithuanian immigrants and a movie fan since childhood, he was an ambitious man with a natural talent for showmanship. Combining shrewd business

Music in Film: Do you hear the people sing?

Feature Ivan Radford Jan 24, 2013

In the wake of Les Misérables' success, Ivan takes a look at how the musical has reinvented itself in the modern era...

Do you hear the people sing? The refrain, bellowed by fans of Les Misérables whenever a French flag is in sight, was given a new meaning when Tom Hooper’s magnificent adaptation of the musical arrived in cinemas earlier this month. Because for the first time in years, we really could hear them - live, on camera.

It's an inspired decision by director Tom Hooper, who ignored the usual route of actors recording a track beforehand and miming for the cameras and instead gave them all an earpiece connected to a piano and told them to let their vocal chords rip.

The result? A cast full of people acting rather than lip-syncing - a raw edge often missing from studio song-fests. It's a

Zac Hanson: Our Sons May Form a Future Band

Their singing careers began with their sensational single “Mmmbop,” but these days, the Hanson brothers are juggling their fan following with their own brood of babies.

And with nine children between the three of them, the multi-talented musicians admit balancing the best of both worlds isn’t always so easy.

“I think the last … four years in a row we did right around 40 to 50 shows in the U.S. every year,” Isaac, who along with wife Nicole are parents to sons Clarke Everett, 5½, and James Monroe, 4, says during Tuesday’s episode of Oprah: Where Are They Now?

“She arrived on Tuesday, Oct. 2, and was welcomed by more love than could fit in the room,” Natalie told People Magazine.

Young Wilhelmina will have plenty of company at the Hanson household: there's Viggo Moriah, born in 2008; River Samuel, from 2006; Penelope Anne, 2005; and the family elder Jordan Ezra, 2002.

Natalie acknowledges her kids' somewhat unconventional names may ruffle a few feathers, and she doesn't care.

"I am not one of those who hides the name until delivery for fear of backlash," she wrote of Viggo's name in a blog on Nameberry.com in July. "In fact, the stronger the reaction I get, the more I tend to like the name!"
