Is Paris Burning? (1966)
Général Von Choltitz: Herr Consul, if I thought that the destruction of Paris could win the war for Germany... I would set the city on fire myself. But we've lost the war.
Lieutenant Henri Karcher: [over the phone to his father] Hello, Papa? This is Lieutenant Karcher. Your son. In spite of your pessimstic view of my military career, I'd like to announce I've just made some prisoners of the general in command of Paris at the Hotel Maurice. He surrendered to me. But I'm still very bad at drill.
Consul Nordling: General, your enemy is the Allied Army, not the people of Paris.
Consul Nordling: And if a bomb should miss?
Général Von Choltitz: A few bombs always miss, but others will hit the target. It's the law of averages.
Consul Nordling: [very softly] A bomb that misses... could hit... Notre Dame. Sainte Chapelle. That's a thousand years of history, turned to dust.
