Warren Beatty outwits the casinos but then confronts Eric Porter
17 August 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Warren Beatty can act, and this movie again proves it. It's a light-hearted 1960s type caper film set against glitzy and rich backgrounds of casinos.

Eric Porter is memorable here as the villain of the piece, milking every line. You might recognize him from his role as Moriarty in the 80s Sherlock Holmes series. He was a Shakespearean actor.

Clive Revill is always effective too. Never at a loss for acting work, his background is New Zealand and also Shakespearean acting.

This leaves Susannah York having to rely on her looks and pixie enigmatic charm. She too has never lacked for work and typically brings life and charm to her parts. Her voice and accent are sometimes hard to decypher, a negative. In this movie, she looks so thin, I wondered about her health.

Strangely, I couldn't see much chemistry between Beatty and York, although they play lovers. The script allowed for almost none anyway.

It's mostly about chemin de fer, in a pedestrian way, and five-card stud, done in an excellent way. Five-card stud lends itself to dramatics. Here the time is taken to see the play and feel the tension. In the casino, the tension is much less, although there's some because Beatty has a way of cheating that might be discovered.

That's where Clive Revill, a Scotland Yard cop, comes in, as he manages to insert Beatty against his nemesis, Porter. Porter's sophisticated and rich but dangerous.

"Kaleidoscope" is first and foremost one of those witty jewel thief type caper films, but without the jewels. Colorful, nice sets, moves right along, and not too complicated, this one is. The stars put it across.
