Uplifting Fantasy About Faith And Hope, 19 November 2005
9/10
Author: mdm-11 from United States

Broderick Crawford (the 1949 Oscar Winning Best Actor) in one of his final roles, playing the down-and-out Don Gregorio, caretaker at a Catholic Orphanage/Church. The nuns seem to have long had enough of Gregorio's drinking and "bad influence" on the children, but when the statue of an angel disappears from the Church, he is at last dismissed.

The film shows that the old man has a heart for children, and that they love him despite his earthly flaws. In almost every scene, Gregorio is hounded by a grinning tempter, constantly offering the alcoholic hard liquor (on the house!).

It soon becomes clear what has happened to the "statue", as well as who the man with all of the free drinks is. The conclusion is a heartwarming metaphor, urging us to seek the good within all people, and to never abandon hope. Clearly produced on a small budget, this is an enchanting little film that will entertain and warm the heart. Highly recommend!

Broderick Crawford Does Star Turn in Mexico!, 18 May 2000
Author: Son of Cathode from New England

Bizarre and maudlin fantasy with US star Broderick Crawford as a hopeless alcoholic who undergoes a trial of faith under the guidance of a pixie-ish "Angel". Filmed in Mexico but spoken in broken English by Mexican actors. Jerry Lewis clone Tin Tan plays a great devil in several incarnations. The obnoxious little angel-girl is kidnapped by the devil to become a carnival prophet. You also get to hear a Mexican version of "Love Me With All Your Heart" sung while Gregorio is in Acapulco. A weird flick with funny dialog, and a slick TV-movie exposition that is both overwrought and overwhelming. Crawford, however, is stunning as the heartfelt drunk, in a role reminiscent of Charles Laughton in the haunting THE BEACHCOMBER.
