Uplifting Fantasy About Faith And Hope, 19 November 2005
Author: mdm-11 from United States

Broderick Crawford (the 1949 Oscar Winning Best Actor) in one of his final roles, playing the down-and-out Don Gregorio, caretaker at a Catholic Orphanage/Church. The nuns seem to have long had enough of Gregorio's drinking and "bad influence" on the children, but when the statue of an angel disappears from the Church, he is at last dismissed.

The film shows that the old man has a heart for children, and that they love him despite his earthly flaws. In almost every scene, Gregorio is hounded by a grinning tempter, constantly offering the alcoholic hard liquor (on the house!).

It soon becomes clear what has happened to the "statue", as well as who the man with all of the free drinks is. The conclusion is a heartwarming metaphor, urging us to seek the good within all people, and to never abandon hope. Clearly produced on a small budget, this is an enchanting little film that will entertain and warm the heart. Highly recommend!
