Before Ron Ormond became the "Jack Chick of cinema" with such films as "If Footmen Tire You, What Will Horses Do?" and "The Burning Hell" to his credit he was a cheep exploitation director in the Deep South turning out such films as "The Girl from Tobacco Row" and although this does not reach quite the same level of lunacy of "If Footmen Tire You…." "The Girl from Tobacco Row" still offers exploitation fans plenty of solid entertainment.

An outlaw on the run hides out with a Southern family consisting of a preacher and his three kids, a son (played by Ron Ormond's son Tim) and two daughters. Despite his past, he hits it off pretty well with the family and becomes very popular as the 50th annual "Tobacco Festival" is getting closer. All is not well however as he has several people on his trail wanting to kill him.

Now, Ormond is never going to get any awards for technical film-making, the acting is poor and he also utilizes only basic camera movements. Despite these flaws however, "The Girl from Tobacco Row" works because it's so much fun to watch and Ormond knows more or less what exploitation fans want in a movie. First off, it has that great gritty drive-in look that films today just don't have and it's pretty well paced. This film also features a few fun songs and a giant harmonica. And as with most hixploit vehicles the Southern accents are fun to listen. "The Girl from Tobacco Row" also features a few fun lines like, "They're just girls, so they don't count" and "If there's snow on the mountain top, there is fire in the furnace". Fans of hixploitation should enjoy this one; it's a good deal of fun.
