Bachelor Peter Christopher is getting pressured from his mother and his boss to get married. His solution is to have platonic friend Greta pretend to be his wife in a furnished apartment whenever he needs to entertain associates. Complications arise when his girlfriend crashes the party.
Christopher is about to have a big date he's been planning for weeks, but his obnoxious boss comes by and drops off his more obnoxious kid niece. He must impose on Greta to help out, though now she has a date also that she must get around the precocious and treacherous brat.
Mr. Brahms has an important if unusual assignment; to get the daughter of visiting friends from Dubuque a starring role in a Broadway play. She's only a kid and an untried, not very good actress either. Peter and Greta arrange an audition with a shady producer of beatnik art house plays.
