The Following, Ep. 2.06, “Fly Away”: Messy episode disrupts show’s pacing

25 February 2014 6:53 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The Following, Season 2, Episode 5, “Fly Away

Written by Dewayne Jones

Directed by Rob Seidenglanz

Airs Mondays at 9pm (Et) on Fox

For the most part, the second season of The Following has been miles ahead of its first. Between Lily Grey’s (Connie Nielsen) psychotic family, Ryan’s (Kevin Bacon) dark but understandable obsession with killing Joe (James Purefoy), and Purefoy’s continuously enjoyable performance, The Following has been a lot of fun. However, “Fly Away”, the season’s sixth episode, is uneven.

What’s become obvious in these last six episodes is that Mark and Luke (Sam Underwood) have turned into The Following’s most compelling characters, outside of Joe. There are some great scenes in “Fly Away” and the majority of them belong to Luke and Mark. Luke’s disbelief that Gisele (Camille De Pazzis) is gone, his taunting of Ryan, Mike (Shaun Ashmore), and Max (Jessica Stoup »

The Following season 2 episode 5 review: Reflection

18 February 2014 11:30 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Review Ron Hogan 19 Feb 2014 - 07:26

Nihilistic, cruel, wilfully dumb... The Following is in its own class of entertainment. Here's Ron's review of the latest episode...

This review contains spoilers.

2.5 Reflection

I have to admit that I really like the way The Following is approaching its second season, and the obvious friction and fractures in the family group are going to create a lot of drama, especially as far as Emma is concerned since she clearly isn't going to go along with the plan to pair her off with touch-phobic Mark while Joe goes off to play daddy with Lily and her international band of foundling murderers. Already Emma's distaste for the group is apparent, and even Joe seems to have some issues with them after his gift from Lily is rebuffed. To gather any group of people together can create problems, and when all those people have an insatiable thirst for blood and carnage, »

The Following, Ep. 2.05, “Reflection”: Who do you think you are?

17 February 2014 8:48 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The Following, Season 2, Episode 5, “Reflection”

Written by Lizzie Mickery

Directed by Nicole Kassell

Airs Mondays at 9pm (Et) on Fox

“I’m not interested in the right thing.”

The Following has been moving along wonderfully this season. It’s been dark, violent, and strangely funny. Luke and Mark (Sam Underwood) have seriously notched up the creepy factor and there have already been a few great twists. Plus now that Joe (James Purefoy) is back in fine form with a clean shave and new suit, we know things are only going to get better from here.

That’s not to say that the show hasn’t had issues since its return. “Family Affair”, the season’s fourth episode, was slow and disrupted the show’s quick pacing and great momentum. And where is Mike (Shawn Ashmore)? Last season he had a hero worship of Ryan (Kevin Bacon) and this season he »

Review Ron Hogan 12 Feb 2014 - 07:31

The Following messes with TV convention, asks its audience to identify with terrible people, and is all the more fun for it...

This review contains spoilers.

2.4 Family Affair

I wish I could figure out who does the sound design for The Following, because they deserve some special recognition. One of the keys to making any show work is how well it sounds. If you can't hear the dialogue that's one thing. In The Following, the dialogue isn't as important as the violence, and this is a show that knows how to get the most out of the sounds of violence on screen. You can have all the bright red blood and collapsible knives you can find in the props department, and if the sound doesn't work, then there's something missing.

More than any other show on network television, The Following knows how to make violence sound horrible. »

The Following, Season 2, Episode 4

Written by Brett Mahoney

Directed by Marcos Siega

Airs Mondays at 9pm (Et) on Fox

“Scars make people more interesting”

Family seems to be the driving force of The Following this season. There’s Mark and Luke’s (Sam Underwood) unhealthy obsession with a proper family, Emma (Valorie Curry) has always desired a place where she belonged, and Lily (Connie Nielsen) has created a family for herself, all of whom seem as transfixed with Joe (James Purefoy) as she is.

The Following has been on a roll this season. It’s been quick, smart, dark, and witty. In a lot of ways (with all the followers split up, Ryan struggling with the loss of Claire, and Joe slowly coming out of hiding), this is a rewrite for the show. So far it’s been working exceptionally well. “Family Affair”, though, is a misstep. It seems like filler, »

The Following 2.04 Review: “Family Affair”

11 February 2014 6:15 AM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

If the most egregious mishandling of The Following is how it uses violence, its characterization of the Followers is not far behind. Usually, when a writer is bothering to tell a story about a serial killer or several serial killers, it’s with the intent of delving into the psyche of someone who falls into that category [&hellip

'The Following' Recap: Emma And Joe Reunite; Max And Ryan Get A Lead

10 February 2014 9:00 PM, PST | Uinterview | See recent Uinterview news »

Emma and Joe reunited with Lily’s help, and Max and Ryan Hardy get a trace on Gisele in The Following’s “Family Affair.”

Max (Jessica Stroup) and Ryan (Kevin Bacon) talk about Lily’s (Connie Nielsen) double life the morning following Ryan’s realization that she is a conspirator of the Subway Murders, not a victim. Looking at Lily’s record, Max just doesn’t understand how a successful at dealer ends up courting a serial murderer. Ryan, however, has it all figured out. She made herself a victim because she knew that Ryan had a habit of over-identifying with the victims and she wanted to get close to him. But why go through all that trouble in the first place when Joe’s ‘following’ has been destroyed by Joe’s death, asks Max. Ryan tells her, once more, that he believes Joe (James Purefoy) is alive and that »

The Following Recap: “Family Affair”

10 February 2014 7:56 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The Following is best viewed in a communal setting, because its real value is providing viewers with plenty of snide remarks on the ineptitude of the FBI, and suggestions about if and how characters will be killed off.  It's nearly a game, to guess if someone will be bludgeoned, gutted or garroted to meet their end, and discerning whether new characters are friends or foes.  The show plays its foreshadowing both ways: sometimes obvious situations remain obvious, or they are their exact opposite.  Hit the jump for more. Unlike last week's episode, "Family Affair" was very dull affair.  Leslie Bibb's new character Jana provided two of the better twists of the night, but otherwise, it was just an exercise in the typical idiocy and murder.  Jana is one of Joe's followers from before his "death," and useful to Joe in helping him make his return.  And in typical Following fashion, »

Has The Following Found a New Big Bad? Connie Nielsen Sounds Off on Shocking Reveal, "Mind-Boggling" Twists Ahead

10 February 2014 10:00 AM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Does The Following have a new cult leader?! The Fox serial killer thriller threw down its most shocking reveal yet in last week's episode when it was revealed that not only is Lily (Connie Nielsen), Ryan's (Kevin Bacon) supposed love interest/new damsel in distress, a killer, but she's also the mother of the psycho twins, Mark and Luke (Sam Underwood)! So are we to believe Lily is going to give Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) a run for his cult leader money and take over the prime villain slot beginning in tonight's all-new episode, "Family Affair"? "Well, I can tell you that you're definitely the one I've been talking to who has some of the most interesting takes on »
