Von Ryan's Express is a 1964 novel by American novelist David Westheimer (1917-2005). The novel was adapted for the screen by Hollywood screenwriters Wendell Mayes and Joseph Landon.
Those who have both read the novel and seen the movie say that the Ryan of the novel was a tougher and meaner character than Ryan as played by Frank Sinatra, making it easier to see why his fellow soldiers in the POW camp didn't like him at first. The book ending is also different than in the movie in that Ryan survives.
They were filmed in El Chorro, a region of Málaga, Spain, where the train weaves in and out of the gorge through about eight kilometers of tunnels.
