Turbulent, fast-paced comedy adventure (one of the best of its time) about unhappy billionaire Belmondo, whose suicide attempts keep failing. When he hires some killers to do him in, he falls in love with beautiful Andress and wants to reverse the deal. Belmondo is ideally suited to this role, exotic locations and lots of stunts make this a joy to watch. A worthy companion piece to the Bond movies of that time.
This film is loosely based on the 1879 novel Tribulations of a Chinaman in China by Jules Verne. See more »

This is that rare thing,a good French action movie.Normally the sound effects for punches and guns are laughably weak and unconvincing as well as any French actor trying to be tough.Belmondo was different,he always came across as a genuinely two-fisted guy who could look after himself in a fight. In this respect he was everything that his contemporary Alain Delon wasn't.This movie, called UP TO HIS EARS in the UK and US is better than his earlier L'HOMME DE RIO.It is basically an updated Jules Verne story about an ordinary Joe who becomes involved in a series of adventures in the Far East that require extraordinary feats of derring-do from him(like some kind of 60s Indiana Jones). You will enjoy this movie and you will enjoy Belmondo who resembles Belgian singer Jaques Brel;he is an actor who knew that his strengths and appeal lay in the movies he made in his own country and did not need to re-invent himself for American movies.Several other continental stars who followed him should have done the same.Gerard Depardieu anyone?
