The line "Már a spejzban vannak az oroszok!" (The Russians are already in the pantry!) is among the most popular, and therefore most quoted lines from Hungarian films.
Voted as one of the "12 Best Hungarian Films 1948-1968" by Hungarian filmmakers and critics ("Budapest 12") in 1969.
The original script was a much more classic Soviet-style partisan film, but thanks to the ideas of Imre Sinkovits and the rest of the crew, it was soon changed into a war comedy, the very first in its genre in Hungarian cinema.
In an interview Imre Sinkovits claimed that as a 16-year-old boy in 1944 he himself had to make little tricks to capture custody and to survive the war. This experience made him a lot easier to play the gambler-like Corporal.
In 1990, a sequel was planned, which would have followed the life of the Corporal between 1945-1990 (i.e. during the Communist regime) but soon the idea was scrapped.
