If The Internet Had Existed When ‘Wrath of Khan’ Hit Theaters

Author’s Note: While on a survey mission, Al Gore is sucked into a giant hole in the ozone that deposits him in the past. Stranded, he uses his knowledge of the future to invent the internet decades sooner than he did in his original timeline. By the 1980s, the internet has evolved to what it became by the early 21st century, dragging fan culture with it. This is one such review that I obtained from our alternate past. I took some heat for posting that as the headline in my earlier screening report, but the fact is that it’s impossible to discuss this movie without discussing that salient point. Let’s also get to what’s really important – Nick Meyer, Harve Bennett And Leonard Nimoy all lied throughout production when they refused »

Reader Spotlight: Peter Chan

16 May 2013 5:37 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

We're getting to know the Film Experience community one-by-one. It's taking a long time, bless you! Today we're talking with Peter, a script supervisor.

Peter working on the set of a movie!

Nathaniel: When and why did you start reading Tfe?

Peter: I was referred to it from Kenneth in (212) and thought Tfe catered to the fun side of film I adored and come awards season... glued. I haven't looked back.

Nathaniel: You work in the industry, right? What's your favorite part of the biz?

Peter: Yeah. I've been a script supervisor primarily for independent features for close to 8 years. It's still strange to me that I get paid to do what I do. Though there are definitely bad days, I generally love what I do. It's great to be on the scene and be so close to the process. My favorite part of this nutty business on the independent »

Upfronts: To Keep Auds, TV Nets Try Going Off Their Grids

15 May 2013 12:18 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

During a week when the TV networks are rolling out their schedules, they are also taking pains to talk about how they are getting off the grid.

Every TV net boasts special programming – once-a-year fare that runs the gamut from The Super Bowl to a showing of “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” – but the next TV season looks to be filled with specials that are a little more so, as well as short-run series that have a “watch-now-or-miss-them-forever” kind of quality.

Fox will unveil a limited-run revival of its venerable “24” spy serial, and Kevin Reilly, Fox’s entertainment chairman, suggested ealier this week that more editions of the series in its new format were not a foregone conclusion. And don’t forget about its science-exploring “Cosmos” limited series featuring “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane as host. ABC will broadcast a new special based on the “Toy Story” movie franchise from its Disney-owned sister, »

A three-hour live staging of the The Sound Of Music will premiere on NBC on Thursday, December 5, the network announced during its upfront presentation today. The project is executive produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, with Carrie Underwood cast as the lead Maria. NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt noted that such big family-oriented productions are rarely mounted these days, “but we are doing it anyway.” Based on the original Broadway musical, The Sound Of Music is set in pre-wwii Austria and  based on the romantic true story of Maria von Trapp (Underwood), an aspiring nun who leaves the abbey to become a governess for the widower Captain von Trapp’s seven children and finds herself falling in love with her employer and questioning her religious calling. It premiered on Broadway in 1959, where it broke box office records and won the Tony for Best Musical. The Sound Of Music features »

Carrie Underwood's NFL Gig

8 May 2013 5:35 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

New York — Carrie Underwood will take over the theme song for "Sunday Night Football," with NBC sticking to the formula of a female country music star for its intro.

Underwood steps in for Faith Hill, who announced last month that she would not be back for a seventh season. Underwood will sing a new version of "Waiting All Day for Sunday Night," the network said Tuesday.

Producer Fred Gaudelli said that after Hill informed him in February, Underwood was the only performer he pursued. She was under consideration for the role when NBC first broadcast the Sunday night NFL games in 2006.

Pink sang the opening tune, set to Joan Jett's "I Hate Myself for Loving You," for that first season before Hill came on.

"For me, it just always seemed like something that would be fun to do," Underwood said during a conference call. "To watch Faith do it week after week, »

Carrie Underwood to Replace Faith Hill on ‘Sunday Night Football’

7 May 2013 2:19 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

NBC has tapped Grammy-winning artist Carrie Underwood to sing the “Sunday Night Football” theme next season.

Underwood will effectively replace Faith Hill, who announced her departure from the primetime NFL broadcast last month.

Amazing 2 have been part of Snf – an honor. I've just let everyone there know it's time 2 let someone else rock the open.—

Faith Hill (@FaithHill) April 15, 2013

Underwood should see plenty of airtime on NBC this fall. The country/pop star will also topline a live broadcast of “The Sound of Music” for NBC over the holidays.

“Sunday Night Football,” which averaged a primetime-best 21.4 million viewers in 2012, returns Sept. 8. »

Don’t Say No Until I Finish Talking: The Story of Richard D. Zanuck

The best part about “Don’t Say No Until I Finish Talking: The Story of Richard D. Zanuck” comes at the very end, when viewers are informed the producer/executive got to see the finished film three days before his death last July. It certainly would have been a shame if Zanuck had missed Laurent Bouzereau’s tribute, which hails him as the “consummate movie guy.” Produced by Steven Spielberg — whose career took off after making “Jaws” with Zanuck — the Turner Classic Movies production is warm and heartfelt, although to fully do Zanuck’s career justice, you’re going to need a bigger doc.

Zanuck — who died at the age of 77 — is interviewed discussing at length his complicated relationship with his famous father, studio chief Darryl F. Zanuck, who told him he would have to “overcome the circumstances of your birth” in terms of perceptions of nepotism. Their interaction took »

Over four days the 2013 Bradford Widescreen Festival located at The Pictureville Cinema played host to a mixture of classics in 70mm, CinemaScope and Cinerama formats. There was a special tribute to the 60th anniversary of CinemaScope, the famous widescreen process developed for Twentieth Century Fox back in the 1950s.

Friday kicked off with a rare 70mm screening of The Longest Day preceded by an informative introduction by Sir Christopher Frayling. This was followed by the much- loved The Great Escape presented for the first time in 4K Digital and the picture and sound were simply stunning. Cinema Retro contributor Dr. Sheldon Hall provided an illuminating introduction to this war classic. Following the delegates’ reception in the Kodak Gallery, The Sound of Music was presented in 70mm. The print was generally good although three quarters of the way through, a reel snapped resulting in a »

Five films to avoid during surgery

24 April 2013 9:24 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A new scheme encourages patients to watch their favourite film while under local anaesthetic. Here are some to steer clear of

A pioneering scheme has been launched at Peterborough City Hospital that encourages older patients undergoing certain orthopedic operations to watch their favourite movie during surgery. The idea is to keep them relaxed while their procedure is carried out under spinal block anesthesia. Consultant anaesthetist Dr Richard Griffiths (top marks for a topical cinema name, there) reports recent requests for The Sound of Music and Dirty Dancing. On the surface, it seems a winner: the hospital saves on sedation costs; the public can expand their cinephilia (and avoid the risks of a general anaesthetic). But anyone with a collection of more than three DVDs will know that they have a way of slipping into the wrong box. Here are five movies to check you're not inadvertently watching as you go under the knife. »

Win: The Great Escape On Blu-Ray

24 April 2013 2:59 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

This year, The Great Escape celebrates its golden anniversary. To honor the 50th anniversary of that film’s release, we’ve compiled 50 interesting facts about the film, actors, the true story, the novel and more, and we’re giving two lucky North American readers the chance to win the anniversary blu-ray of the film.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment are proud to announce that The Great Escape will arrive on Blu-ray for the first time on May 7, 2013. Based on a true story, The Great Escape is “a motion picture that entertains, captivates, thrills and stirs” (Variety). In 1943, the Germans opened a maximum-security prison-of-war camp, designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. By doing so, they unwittingly assembled the finest escape team in military history – brilliantly portrayed by Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson, and James Coburn – who worked on what became the largest prison breakout ever attempted. »

Smash Recap: Parental Guidance Rejected

There are two ways to look at Smash‘s final Tuesday-night outing: You could feel depressed that NBC is pushing its musical dramedy to Saturday nights, where it’ll be whacked with the Grim Reaper’s scythe like a piñata at a child’s birthday party. Or you could raise the adult beverage of your choice and rejoice that this week’s episode featured the indomitable Bobby and another one of his bitchy quips.

“This is boring,” our chorus boy sighed as Bombshell star Ivy Lynn made nice with her Broadway legend mama Leigh Conroy (Bernadette Peters) on their first day of rehearsal. »

We open on a post-coital Karen shuffling to the kitchen in a t-shirt to make coffee. It's not the shirt she swiped from Jimmy Charming last episode, and shouldn't it be? Jimmy shuffles out after her wrapped in an afghan that you know Karen's grandmother knitted for her never dreaming it would end up wrapped around some greasy half-naked dude who defiled her granddaughter atop it.

They grossly let us know that they banged repeatedly and for hours and are about to do it again when the buzzer rings. Karen hits the intercom. It's her father (Dylan Baker), flown in from Iowa for a conference on milk machine technology or whatever the hell it is people from Iowa talk about. Karen's panicked but Jimmy thinks letting Dad know he defiled his daughter repeatedly atop her grandmother's quilt is the funniest thing ever. She forces him into his clothes and out the window, »

True Blood is back in June and it looks like Pam and Tara have a little bit of a love/hate relationship.

Jenna Wolfe, who just came out publicly about her relationship and pregnancy with fellow NBC host Stephanie Gosk, was demoted from the Today Show's weekend co-host to its newsreader. Interesting timing. I hope Jenna was part of this decision.

A Chicago-based lesbian Navy sailor is fighting against charges of fraternization for being in a civil union with another woman of a lower-rank.

Review: 'Mental' With Toni Collette Is A Watchable Farce That Could Do With Going A Bit More Nuts

Mental” marks director P.J. Hogan’s (“My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “Confessions of a Shopaholic”) reunion with his “Muriel’s Wedding” star Toni Collette. The intervening years may have made them both older, but not necessarily wiser, as “Mental” seems content to rework the “Muriel’s Wedding” formula but with greater resources, like a now-established star and a supporting cast of notable Aussie actors (many of whom we had kind of forgotten were Australian) at its disposal. Both films take small-town Australia as their settings, both feature female characters marked by unpopularity and social inadequacy, and both are inspired by, and constantly reference, particular kitschy elements of pop culture -- ‘Muriel’ had Abba, "Mental" has “The Sound of Music.” But where the former film kept its focus narrow and thus managed a degree of consistency through tonal shifts from comedy to pathos, (a lot due to Collette’s breakthrough performance »
