Excellent little thriller., 31 March 2001

I wasn't expecting much when I first saw this little b/w thriller, but I was pleasantly surprised. Stuart Whitman plays a man who escapes from an insane asylum, hiding out in an isolated and somewhat spooky-looking farmhouse near-by. Initially I chose to watch it because I'm a Whitman fan, but the rest of the cast is pretty interesting too. Joanna Woodward shines as the woman Whitman's escaped criminal seeks shelter with, and Edward Mulhare is very good as the doctor on the case. And good old Alan Napier is always a welcome sight. (-Napier by the way, for some reason happens to pop up in quite a lot of my favorite movies, probably more so than is the case with any other actor I know.) One of the strongest aspects of "Signpost To Murder" is the tense atmosphere through-out, and the great sets. For instance, the inside of the house where most of the action takes place is brilliantly designed, and the black windmill outside is effectively creepy. It may have a very short running time (74 minutes !), but I'll advise all suspense fans out there to check this rare gem out, and make sure you catch it in all its original 2.35:1 Panavision widescreen glory. I know I'll be watching it again.
