Joe Baron is a cop with money problems that seem solved when Joe is assigned to a burglary case involving half a million dollars stolen from a doctor office's safe. The very rich doctor Dr. Horace Van Tilden managed to shoot the intruder during the burglary but the thief is still breathing when the two cops arrive on the scene. On the way to the hospital the burglar reveals to Joe Baron that his target indeed was the half million dollars in the doctor's safe and the combination to the safe.Joe and his partner, Pete Delanos, decide to get to the cash and keep it for themselves. Glenn Ford and Ricardo Montalban are good policemen gone bad who fall into "The Money Trap," a 1965 noir directed by Burt Kennedy. Ford plays Joe Baron, married to beautiful Lisa (Elke Sommer) who is no longer getting dividends from her father's company. Downsizing and some yard sales would seem to be in order, but instead, Joe has his eye on a mob doctor's (Joseph Cotten) safe that's filled with money. Montalban, as his partner Pete, wants in. One man has already been killed cracking the safe, and there are some surprises in store.
This film is just okay, kind of depressing, but it's notable for the performance of Rita Hayworth as the widow of the dead burglar. She looks pretty used up as her character should, but she's still a stunning woman with true star charisma and great chemistry with Ford, her old co-star. And, as someone else mentioned, how many 50-year-old women playing character roles get to shack up with the lead in a movie? Well, if anyone could, it's Rita.
Ford was an appealing star without a huge range; this character could have been mined for more depth, but he's fine in the role. Montalban is very good as his money-obsessed partner.
Worth it for Rita.
