Every property owner in the Valley is in danger of losing their land due to the legal trickery of a ruthless railroad baron who backs up his action with an army of 200 men. Into this tense scene rides an iron-willed young man who defiantly tells the Barkleys he is the "bastard son" of the dead family patriarch, Tom Barkley - and who demands an equal share of the estate.

With a massive cattle drive about to begin - 3,000 steers, 550 miles in 24 days - Heath has problems gaining the respect of the 40 hands needed to carry it off. His problems escalate when a decorated ex-general of the Civil War agrees to join the drive, because the former general has designs of recruiting the hands and starting his own army.

Season 2, Episode 7: Target

31 October 1966
Joshua Hawks, who is standing for public office, rides into town and accuses the Nick Barkley's family of stealing land and all produce grown on it illegal. Jarrod is concerned at Hawks' actions, and knows suing the man will do more good for Hawks than the Barkley's. His campaign manager Frank Wesley risks dismissal when he challenges Hawks tactics, but ultimately agrees to go along. The Barkley's face further pressure as buyers start to fall off when there is doubt over the produce grown on their farms. A fire at Hawk's hotel is blamed without evidence on the Barkley's. The tension grows as Hawks requests a meeting with Victoria Barkley. He proposes a truce, but she rejects the idea. He then reveals he'd known the Barkley's when her husband was still alive and used to work on the farm. A special governors meeting is planned and Frank is appalled to discover Hawks plans to blow up the town hall killing the Barkley family. The local shop keeper who sold the explosives becomes suspicious and warns Nick. He in turn meets Hawks at the town hall, where Hawks is wounded in a gun fight. Suddenly remorseful Hawks warns the others about the explosives, they escape but he is killed in explosion

Season 2, Episode 8: The Velvet Trap

7 November 1966
A wagon traveling through the night loses a wheel. While doing repairs a stranger rides up an offers help. Sabrina Lynn passenger sees him and rushes off into the night, only to drop in a dead faint at the feet of Nick Barkley. Next day Nick organizes to get Sabrina to town and set up to rejoin the now repaired coach. He is clearly infatuated by the girl but she resists his advances. Later that day the stranger she saw the previous night arrives in town. Sabrina tells Nick about the man, Jack Floyd, wanted for murder. A day later another man, Jack arrives in town. It becomes clear this is the real Jack Floyd and Sabrina loves him. She goes to the first Jack and tells him where to find the real Jack, then tells Nick to meet her at the location. Nick the better gun, shoots and wounds Floyd. The sheriff discovers his real name was John Peirce, and he'd trailing Floyd after the murder of his brother. Sheriff discovered Sabrina met Jack when the night stage arrived. Nick goes to confront her only to find she's checked out. He tracks her and Floyd to a farmhouse and a gun battle erupts.

A woman, her mother-in-law and young son are considered squatters. The Cattlemen want her off the land. The woman will not make it easy for them. She fights to remain in what she considers is her land. She feels her missing husband of two years, worked very hard on that land, so why should she pack up and leave. Jarrod Barkley is heading her way with proof why she can't remain on the property. However, by accident caused by the woman's son, he ends up with amnesia. While he's struggling with no memory at all, he decides he will help the woman fight for her land. The Cattlemen will stop at nothing to push them off that land. Meanwhile Jarrod's family is worried at this point over Jarrod missing. He had left days ago and they have not heard anything from him. So his brothers Nick and Heath decide to follow the trail he took.

Audra and Victoria Barkley arrive at a train station to catch their train. There's just one catch. There are three brothers who are already there trying to rob the train station safe. They just want a few hundred dollars so they can start a new life buying their own ranch. Here's the catch, no one knows the combination to the safe and the brothers can't open it no matter how hard they try. The train station manager explains that due to not being able to open the safe, he requested for a new combination. He shows them proof of the telegram sent. So everyone at the station is held hostage.
