Straight razor killer is afoot while gang plans a train heist
17 January 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

The general characteristics of the German krimi movies based on Edgar Wallace stories are by now well understood. The black and white ones look very nice indeed, with sharp black and white cinematography. Varied locations help. They contain a certain amount of humorous interplay. The music is original and jaunty at times, punctuating the action. Acting is solid, with some making repeated appearances. Joachim Fuchsberger has typically a leading and detective role. Karin Dor appears in several. The humor is often supplied by Eddi Arentt (extra t to fool IMDb's word processor which makes this aren't). These are generally enjoyable movies with good production values. The average is reasonably watchable.

What makes them better or worse tends to be the story and script. When the story is lacking, the movie tends to be lack zip, interest, tension and momentum. "Room 13" is at best an average entry in the series. It's logical enough and people criss cross doing logical things, but it doesn't develop tension considering what the main pieces of action are. Too many scenes are dragged out with little happening and not the electricity that would uplift the movie. There are two stories here, and neither one fulfills its potential. One story involves a gang that's planning a train robbery and eventually executes it. Much of the action is in and around a nightclub that houses room 13. There's nothing really special about room 13, except that one wall is a vault like a safe. But the script doesn't use this feature. The head of the gang (Richard Haussler) threatens Walter Rilla with exposure so that he can use his large estate to hide the proceeds of the train robbery. The gang also threatens Rilla's daughter, Karin Dor. Meanwhile, there are several killings of women by straight razor. Rilla's razor is missing, and he blames his butler. But there is also a gang member (Hans Clarin) who waves a razor when he gets angry. Dor acts rather peculiarly herself, often staring at her mother's portrait. Her mother was murdered 20 years earlier when Rilla helped Haussler.

So you see there is plenty going on. I haven't even mentioned what Fuchsberger is up to. He's hired on by Rilla as protection. When Haussler intimidates Rilla badly enough, Rilla fires Fuchsberger. That doesn't stop him from continuing at all. Then there is a Scotland Yard bumbler. The script juggles enough balls in enough locations with enough people that the movie keeps going, yet it's not in a way that really grabs you because we do not get top notch plot points and sharp conflicts in the story. However, we get a surprising ending to it that helps quite a lot.

So, I'm not in the camp that says this is a really good krimi or entry in this series. And I'm not in the camp that says this movie is a loser or bust. I think it's an average entry.
