Albert Lieven leads a gang to steal the crown jewels from the Tower of London
16 April 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Das Verratertor" (1964) (Traitor's Gate) comes close to the end of Rialto's black and white Edgar Wallace krimi movies. Two more were to follow ("Again the Ringer" and "The Sinister Monk") before the series turned to color with "The Hunchback of Soho".

"Das Verratertor apparently met with little success among fans because it departed from expectations and patterns peculiar to earlier entries in the series. It's largely forgotten and also ignored by critics. The movie departed from the usual focus on inspectors of police, strings of murders, odd criminal masterminds, multiple suspects and comic or whimsical elements accentuated by the music score. Instead Jimmy Sangster wrote a heist movie and Freddie Francis directed it in film noir style. Police are largely absent. Some comic elements are introduced in the person of Eddie Arentt, but the major focus is on the planning, execution and aftermath of a daring robbery of the Crown Jewels from the Tower of London. Unlike "The Asphalt Jungle", in which we sympathize with the criminals as human beings, the treatment here is much more distant or cold. For those used to British noirs, which can be quite tough, this is no problem. For others, this may limit involvement to the details of the plot. Fortunately, this is well done. The aftermath in particular is a maze of double crosses. And we have on hand Albert Lieven, Klaus Kinski and Margot Trooger to bring some electricity to the screen.

This film is a virtual Britnoir, scripted, paced and filmed as such, quite darkly. Noir fans can add this one to the list of Britnoirs even though it is a German production.
