Storyline

A greedy developer has placed huge machines to suck dry a part of the ocean near Tokyo so he can put luxury condos there. After a storm, a giant egg washes up on the beach nearby and is immediately put on public display. The developer's plans go awry when he disrupts Godzilla's rest and the monster goes stomping through Tokyo again. It's up to the elderly Mothra, and then to its two offspring, to save Tokyo from destruction. Written by Molly Malloy <mailcall@bluemarble.net>

Trivia

When Godzilla is wading in the water heading for Iwo Island, he is only shot from behind. This is due to the fact that Haruo Nakajima was actually wearing the suit from King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) instead of the Mosi Goji suit. It had already been planned to use the suit from this film for the next film in the series, Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964) and in order to save wear and tear it was decided to use the older suit. In the days before digital compositing, it was common practice to print matted elements with a degree of transparency, to minimize matte lines. It was an additional step of complexity to the process, which was deliberate and not an error. Many movies are notable for partially transparent mattes, including Robinson Crusoe on Mars and Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back. See more »

Another one of Ishiro Honda's classic monster movies
19 June 2006 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

As a major fan of the original dark, haunting kaiju movies, I very much enjoy watching "Godzilla vs. Mothra" even though I still can't understand why they call Mothra "the Thing" (maybe it's just in the Americanized dubbed version).

Godzilla's appearance in this movie is very good, however, there are some problems with his mouth in this movie. They are very wobbly and that's because in the sequence where Godzilla emerges from underground, the suit got damaged and the mouth got loose. And later on, the head caught on fire, although if you ask me, that was pretty cool and showed how invincible and invulnerable Godzilla really is.

The music's superior with legendary composer Akira Ifukube campusing the score. Eiji Tsuburaya handles the great special effects and Ishiro Honda's talents as a director come through in this movie.
