User Reviews

Extraordinary Grau film with a comprehensive study of sociology of the time.
7 May 2016 | by (Spain) – See all my reviews

"El Espontáneo" is a good example of the first film of Jorge Grau, testimonial film, but easy moral judgments. It is a film that includes tearing and discomfort of films by Marco Ferreri ("Los Chicos", 1959) and Carlos Saura ("Los Golfos", 1960), bringing its characters a desperation and an amble that remind a Pasolini cinema. Through the character of "Paco" (Luis Ferrín), the images take us by a bitter and hard Madrid, in which the protagonist tries to survive and either way.

Today we have to rescue from oblivion this great Spanish film, as great as unknown. "El Espontáneo" is an echo of Italian neorealism that was behind almost ten years, but is also a Spanish film in its content, an urban portrait Madrid 60s and its humble people, its youth, its streets and its bars.

And is that the 60s were a good time of economic growth, was work as seen in the film, but our protagonist "Paco", a young uneducated because he had to get to work to help at home, not content with earning tips in a gas station, or the bucket and roller (hilarious scene when just exchanging insults with a painter after asking how much is gained in that office, and it is not the only scene of people insulting down the street or at the box office "La Ventas" for the enjoyment of fans philology lingo).

For "Paco" everything in life is a matter of checking courage and be brave, like to audition for an actor skipping a line of hundreds of young people like him, go to an interview perfume salesman with no experience calling in the ad or get a job antenna installer, lying about his experience. But all ends well until finally gives the solution to your ambitions, be a bullfighter jumping into the arena of "El Espontáneo" The film is totally sociological, so that sometimes surprised by the intelligence and the detail of their analysis and invaluable as social radiography. In general we can say that all the characters are a product of their environment and reproduction.
