Trivia

Marlon Brando said that he found co-star David Niven so funny, he often broke into uncontrollable laughter during filming, thus ruining many takes. It was so bad that he would have to force himself not to look Niven in the eye during filming.
Almost twenty-five years after this film was released, it was remade as Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988), with Michael Caine and Steve Martin as the two new leads.

Before Marlon Brando and David Niven, Universal Pictures had lined up Gregory Peck and Tony Curtis for the leads in this movie; they had both co-starred the previous year in Captain Newman, M.D. (1963). Curtis had been one of Universal's most successful contract players, and Peck had just won the Oscar and given them a huge box-office success with To Kill a Mockingbird (1962).

Originally, Tippi Hedren was supposed to play Janet Walker in this film, but Alfred Hitchcock told Ralph Levy she was not available, so Shirley Jones was cast instead. Years later, Hedren would appear as Marlon Brando's wife in A Countess from Hong Kong (1967).
