Campy combination of Italian sex farce and mondo movie
9 March 2008 | by (Worcester, MA) – See all my reviews

"Primitive Love" is a campy combination of two subgenres that were very popular for low-budget filmmakers in Italy in the mid 1960s. The film is both a goofy (and throughly unfunny, at least intentionally) sex farce, and a ridiculously politically incorrect mondo movie, a style of fake documentary that showed various staged acts of bizarreness throughout the world. Granted, nowadays, both genres have very limited appeal and will only be enjoyed by die hard cult and psychotronic cinema fans. However, if that includes you, you'll probably be entertained by this campy release from Something Weird.

The stars of the film are Jayne Mansfield and the Italian comedy team Franco and Ciccio. Jayne Mansfield, despite being past her prime from eight or so years earlier, still looks sexy and has a fantastic body. Seeing her talk about primitive cultures, the social life of Marxist countries, and how civilized men are primitive when it comes to love provides plenty of unintentional laughs as long as you aren't too offended by the political incorrectness of the project. The Italian comedy team Franco and Ciccio are, on the other hand, unbearably unfunny to the point were the become surreal. They're an imitation of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, except without the subtlety or social subtext of that pairing. Like many psychotronic films, if the plot description appeals to you, you'll enjoy this. If not, steer clear and watch something by Bergman instead. (5/10)
