Miriam Colon hires hit-man Gene Nelson to rub out a well-guarded politician on an island
24 December 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Thunder Island" (1963) is a black and white noir that's set in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with an extended finale filmed at San Juan's Morro Castle. The story has hit-man Gene Nelson being hired by revolutionary Miriam Colon to assassinate a former tyrannical politician-leader so that he cannot regain power. He lives on a heavily-guarded island with his daughter and his own private zoo that features a fine-looking jaguar. The apolitical Nelson devises a plan that makes use of a delivery boat run by an ex-Madison Avenue type (Brian Kelly, a kind of John Gavin type). He's separated from wife Fay Spain, who prefers New York, but she's visiting with their daughter and trying to patch things up.

The film looks good in widescreen. The locations help. Nelson's character is acerbic, which makes him interesting. Colon's character is quite fierce, making her interesting. Kelly is bland. Spain is quite feisty. The ending brought back memories of "The Big Boodle", with Errol Flynn, which was filmed at Havana's Morro castle.

The movie is somewhat below par and the IMDb rating of 5.4 is about right. Worth seeing for noir completists. In addition, I wanted to see Gene Nelson again, having a memory only of him in the excellent "Crime Wave". Agile and athletic, he acquitted himself well in a role that called for him to be in shape.
