Hugh O'Brian in Italy hunts for Cyd Charisse's missing husband
7 February 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Reviewers have pegged "Assassination in Rome" accurately. I found its name on a list of giallos, an early one from 1965. It does qualify as such, what with a masked murderer and several deaths, but only mildly so. It is more like a mild Euro-spy thriller, what with microfilm being the target and a number of beautiful Italian locations as locales. Hugh O'Brian is the steadfast reporter playing detective who is trying to help Cyd Charisse find her missing husband. He's more comfortable in his scenes than she is.

The plot mainly revolves around O'Brian's search, which makes it more a detective movie than anything else. His search is not difficult to follow, even though it leads in many directions. As is usual, there are some dead ends, some fights, and no chases. This is a fairly unexceptional search apart from the locations and the characters that O'Brian encounters. Along the way, there was something about one character that made me guess correctly who seemed to be behind the criminal activities. In retrospect, I can partially understand that person's role, but certainly not fully. Maybe a second viewing will wrap that up, but maybe not. As it stands, I am puzzled and I imagine most viewers will be too. There wasn't much explanation after the murderer was revealed.

The climactic scenes are in a Hitchcock vein, but again toned down.

The overall result is about average, not lacking in enjoyment for me. It's a movie for escape and temporary diversion from the pressures or worries or maybe the boredom of ordinary life. If one asks nothing more, it's okay.
