Truck driver Adrian Hoven gets tangled up with murder and drugs
26 October 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"The Black Cobra" (1963) is a German-made krimi. It's a b-movie that lacks the polish and sophistication of the better-known Rialto and CCC Edgar Wallace movies. It has a dark and noirish look throughout. It's reasonably entertaining. The re-release that I watched has two audio tracks, German and English, and no subtitles. This is too bad, because the English dubbing completely loses the acting ability of the cast, which is quite good.

In this one the cast is really good. There is lead Adrian Hoven assisted by the attractive Ann Smyrner. He has a friend in the big guy Ady Berber who has a kind of menagerie. This explains the cobra of the title, but that aspect isn't exploited in the movie other than to insert a fight between a mongoose and a cobra. Berber has to face off against another monstrous type. Wolfgang Preiss and Gunter Meissner will be recognized and appreciated as part of a gang dealing in drugs. Klaus Kinski is an addict willing to spy and snitch for a fix.

The story is a stew that's beyond explaining and not really worth explaining. It's what makes the movie below par, objectively speaking. However, there is something about these old foreign black and white secondary films, with their quirky movie scores, that I find attractive.
