Storyline

George Washington McLintock, "GW" to friends and foes alike, is a cattle baron and the richest man in the territory. He anxiously awaits the return of his daughter Becky who has been away at school for the last two years. He's also surprised to see that his wife Katherine has also returned. She had left him some years before without really explaining what he done but she does make the point of saying that she's returned to take their daughter back to the State Capitol with her. GW is highly respected by everyone around him including the farmers who are pouring into the territories with free grants of land and the Indians who are under threat of being relocated to another reservation. Between his wife, his headstrong daughter, the crooked land agent and the thieving government Indian agent, GW tries to keep the peace and do what is best for everyone. Written by garykmcd

Trivia

In the scene where the Comanches are being outfitted with rifles it's easy to see that they're Krag Jorgensen carbines, meaning that this film takes place in at least 1896, as the Krag didn't come into service as military armory until 1894. See more »

Goofs

A tipsy McLintock is trying to walk Katherine upstairs while swigging from a full whiskey bottle. They fall to the bottom of the stairs and the bottle clearly spills. Katherine picks the bottle up and bops McLintock on the head with it, then it amazingly becomes a full bottle again just before she throws it against the wall and it shatters. See more »

A great John Wayne film
28 January 2003 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

This is film-making at it's best! Superbly cast and acted, John Wayne stars with Maureen O'Hara, Patrick Wayne, Chill Wills and Strother Martin in a western with a twist of humor. There's some drama and enough action to keep the viewer's interest, but this film contains some hilarious scenes, particularly between O'Hara and Wayne. Those two have worked together (superbly!) before and it shows. Their interaction is perfect and the results provide some real comic relief! This isn't one of Wayne's old "oaters", but a wonderfully written and executed film. Don't miss this film

  • it's one of the greats!
