William Lucas is being pressured to hand over counterfeit plates
29 June 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

William Lucas, now living in an apartment separated from his wife and daughter, is fresh out of prison after two years. He's going straight with a job driving a truck, but he and his family are being threatened to hand over a set of counterfeit plates, which he doesn't have. Acting something like a detective, he touches on his old gang contacts. He stirs up the pot, in order to locate them.

This brit noir introduces an amazing number of characters and plot elements for such a short movie. The location work is good. The two reviews here see it as excellent and uninspired. I think it's far from excellent. It does indeed lack sharp direction and dialog. It more or less trudges along without dynamism and strong scenes. We empathize with Lucas and his quest. We follow it along, but it doesn't grab us as a better or more inspired film would do. The energy seems lacking. It's not in the same league as the better brit noirs like "Three Steps to the Gallows" aka "White Fire", "Hell Drivers", and "The Long Haul", to mention only a few that are not even at the top of the class.

This film is for noir fans and completists, who will like it despite its imperfections. I think most other viewers will regard it as fairly mundane and pedestrian.
