Book Review: "Steve McQueen: The Actor And His Films"

By Tom Lisanti

Steve McQueen: The Actor and His Films by Andrew Antonaides and Mike Siegel from Dalton Watson Fine Books is one of the finest, most lavish movie books about a single actor that I have ever read. All of iconic superstar Steve McQueen’s films are equally discussed from his classics (The Blob, The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, The Cincinnati Kid, The Sand Pebbles, Bullitt, The Thomas Crown Affair, Papillon), to his lesser known earlier movies (Never Love a Stranger, The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery)An Enemy of the People, The Hunter), to his misfires (The Honeymoon Machine, Soldier in the Rain, Baby the Rain Must Fall), to his TV series (Wanted: Dead or Alive). Most coffee table-type movie books that I have encountered are extravagantly- made, featuring glorious photographs, but containing very little substance. However, Steve McQueen »

Here's looking at you, kid: how classic films are winning new fans

Buster Keaton, Bugsy Malone and the Wizard of Oz are captivating children at film clubs across the UK

Black and white images flicker across absorbed young faces as timeless stories unfold. To the delight of the education charity Filmclub, classic films are captivating children as young as seven.

In the past year, a quarter of all the films watched by its members have been pre-1979 movies and some, such as The Electric Edwardians (1900), date right back to the birth of cinema.

Launched in 2008 by film director Beeban Kidron and educationist Lindsay Mackie, Filmclub (@filmclub) helps schools set up film clubs and supplies a huge range of thoughtfully curated films.

Libby Serdiuk, aged 10, was "pleasantly surprised by The General (1926):

"I had never watched a film without sound or colour. Before I knew it my eyes were glued to the screen! The stunts were exhilarating to watch, Buster Keaton was mind blowing, »

Guy Richie Targets "The Man From U.N.C.L.E."

According to internet reports, director Guy Ritchie ("Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows") will reteam with producer Lionel Wigram, to shoot a big screen Warners remake of the 1960's classic spy TV series "The Man From U.N..C.L.E."

The original NBC TV series, broadcast September 1964 to January 1968, followed the exploits of two Us secret agents, played by actors Robert Vaughn ("The Magnificent Seven") and David McCallum ("The Great Escape") , who work for the clandestine, international law-enforcement agency 'U.N.C.L.E.' ('United Network Command for Law and Enforcement').

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer produced 105 "U.N.C.L.E." episodes, originally developed by Sam Rolfe for executive producer Norman Felton, with"James Bond" author Ian Fleming contributing characters 'Napoleon Solo' and 'April Dancer', to series scriptwriters Robert Towne ("Chinatown") and Harlan Ellison ("The City On The Edge »

Intimate Photos Of Steve McQueen From Life Magazine

6 December 2011 3:36 PM, PST | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

The above photo of Steve McQueen in Bullitt presents the legendary actor after he was well-established as a screen superstar. However in 1963 he was yet to hit major stardom and was primarily known for his TV series Wanted: Dead or Alive. His success in the 1960 film The Magnificent Seven had yet to be fully capitalized on. That would change with the release of The Great Escape later in 1963. In the interim, Life magazine sent photographer John Dominis to spend some casual time with McQueen and his wife Neile at their home in California. The photos that Dominis captured offer some truly remarkable insights into the brash young actor, who would become increasingly private as his fame soared. There are photos of McQueen racing cars, working out, cuddling with his wife and hunting in the mountains. Click here to view »

'Rayman 3' Going HD in 2012

30 November 2011 10:00 AM, PST | MTV Multiplayer | See recent MTV Multiplayer news »

This coming Spring, Ubisoft is giving Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc an HD update on Psn and Xbla.

In this writer's humble opinion, Rayman was one of the very few 2D franchises to cleanly make that early leap into 3D at the end of the 90's and beginning of the last decade. Rayman for the PS1 was one of the finest platformers for Sony's first console and its 3D sequel, Rayman 2: The Great Escape was one of the finest platformers for the Dreamcast way back when we thought Sega would always be in the hardware business.

Unfortunately, I never got the opportunity to play the third entry in the series, Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc but it sounds like the point where the sweet and charming series began to start winking at audiences, slightly breaking the fourth wall and poking fun at the genre conventions of platformers. Since then, the franchise has been all Rabbids, »

Desperate Scousewives debuts with more than 500,000 viewers

29 November 2011 3:45 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

E4 reality TV show performs well on its first night as it follows in the high-heeled footsteps of the The Only Way Is Essex

After The Only Way Is Essex, Made In Chelsea and Geordie Shore, the structured reality bandwagon rolled into Liverpool with Desperate Scousewives, which debuted with more than 500,000 viewers on E4.

It remains to be seen whether the new E4 series wins a Bafta, like The Only Way Is Essex, but it certainly has the most puntastic title.

Desperate Scousewives, which the Radio Times said was "about as lifelike as the terracotta tans, straightened bleached blonde locks, acrylic fingernails and foot-long eyelashes" of its stars, averaged 562,000 viewers, a 3.1% share, between 10pm and 11.05pm on Monday on E4, including the E4+1 audience.

The first of the eight-part series performed well for E4, 24% up on the channel's slot average for the past three months, but failed to hit the ratings heights of 1 million-rating Towie. »

Curio: Stanley Chow's Curvilinear Caricatures

Alexa here. UK illustrator Stanley Chow is one of my favorite pop caricaturists.  It's great fun to follow his flickr as he is quite prolific, adding posters and portraits weekly, all in his signature modern, curvilinear style.  His Mad Men character tributes were so successful that the Lions Gate lawyers forced him to stop selling them. Here is a selection of his film portraits, many of which are for sale at his shop. Snap 'em up before more lawyers get involved!

The story of Linda Carty is tragic. A British citizen born in the West Indies, she was sent to death row in Texas in 2002. She's due to be executed for her involvement in the murder of a woman from whom it is alleged Carty was planning to steal her newborn son. Film-maker Steve Humphries concentrates on how a defence from one of the state's capital defence attorneys who's had over 20 other clients end up on death row, and evidence given by the gang who it is said broke into the woman's home with her, led to the conviction. It's a good week for … Going under

25 November 2011 4:06 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Fancy exploring some hidden depths? There's no need to wait for the new series of The Only Way Is Essex, as this week's telly is going under like a square-eyed badger.

While its users are studiously avoiding eye contact with buskers, accidental conversation and other people's germs every morning, the capital's creaking beast of a transport system is struggling to carry 4 million people. The London Underground Revealed (Thu, 9pm, National Geographic) looks at what goes on behind the scenes and how, after lessons learned from the 1987 King's Cross fire, modern stations such as Canary Wharf are so fireproof that they don't need sprinkler systems.

If you think your commute's bad, take a walk in the flippers of the Mosquito Coast's divers. Unreported World: Diving Into Danger (Fri, 7.30pm, Channel 4) sees them go on a merry booze cruise, then get up at the crack of dawn to risk their lives »

Sos Staff Gateway Films: Bill Mesce – ‘The Magnificent Seven’

18 November 2011 1:01 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

There was no a-ha! moment, no seeing of the light, no epiphany.  I’d loved movies since I was a kid, had been a buff since my early teens, but there was no one, shining instance of enlightenment where my relationship with film graduated to something — …  Well, the kind of thing my Sound on Sight colleagues have been talking about this month with their “gateway” films.  Instead, it was a cumulative experience for me; my road to that point was a long, winding, gradual one.  Here and there along that road something would lodge in the ol’ gray matter, tickle at some deep place, until enough of those somethings gathered up over the years finally coalesced into a critical mass.

But I can tell you where that first turn in that road was; that first stop where I picked up that first something.  I was six years old, it was »

24 Hours of...War

13 November 2011 2:21 PM, PST | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

The thing about war movies is, like actual wars, they’re sometimes very long...

Another holiday, another marathon, this one brought to you by the pain and suffering of untold millions! In honor of  Veterans / Armistice / Remembrance Day, here's twenty-four hours of war movies to “celebrate” (by which I mean “only remember it’s happening because the banks are closed.”). You could also look at this as “24 Hours of Being Bummed Out,” but there’s still a post-apocalyptic marathon on the way, so buck up, sport!

8:00 Am - Gone with the Wind - 238 min

I figure the best way to start these things is with an interminably long film everyone’s already seen; that way grogginess, stragglers’ arrivals and breakfast won’t actively interfere with the entertainment. The first time I can remember seeing Gone with the Wind was in fourth grade. Remember “movie day” when you were in school? »

Review: Jane's Addiction Sounds Like Second-Tier U2 in 'Escape Artist'

18 October 2011 4:39 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Here’s one way to cure fan addiction: Make ‘em wait eight years between releases, then return with an album as competent and forgettable as “The Great Escape Artist,” the long-in-coming latest from Jane’s Addiction. The most remarkable thing about the band’s very belated fourth effort is how much, in songs like “Hit You Back,” they sound like second-tier U2 -- a comparison that wouldn’t have come up back in the group’s more ferocious ‘90s heyday. Perry Farrell has toned down his formerly banshee-esque wailing for a more measured kind of pleading, and »

Music: Music Review: Jane’s Addiction: The Great Escape Artist

17 October 2011 10:07 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

The dark, heady, ballsy intoxication of Jane’s Addiction resurfaced as a low-calorie lager in the form of the group’s 2003 comeback, Strays. That said, the album isn’t really that bad. But The Great Escape Artist is. Where Strays pays homage, albeit diluted and misguided, to the primal force Jane’s Addiction once was, Great Escape is a bold, erratic, pathetic attempt to recontextualize Jane’s for the 21st century. Or something. Great Escape’s biggest misstep is one of rock’s most clichéd: hiring a hot, hip young talent from whom to siphon youthful energy. In »

The Fonz' motorcycle from 'Happy Days' to be auctioned

10 October 2011 6:42 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

No one truly knows from where the Fonz drew his mystical powers of coolness. Was it the hair? The jacket? What gave Fonz the ability to pound jukeboxes into functioning? To literally jump sharks on water skis?

It's a decent bet that Fonz' 1949 Triumph Trophy TR5 motorcycle may have had something to do with it. And now, the vehicle that Henry Winkler made famous in the opening credits of "Happy Days" can be yours; the bike will be auctioned on Nov. 12 at the Petersen Automative Museum in Los Angeles.

Now for the reality check. The motorcycle has a smashed speedometer, it's rusted, the seat is sagging and it hasn't actually run since the 1970s. Also, Henry Winkler once famously told Cycle World that he is "scared to death of motorcycles. That's how good an actor I am."

So why would anyone want this disappointing bike? It turns the coolest person »

Celebrating Quatermass And The Pit

9 October 2011 10:39 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

A classic of British sci-fi makes its Blu-ray debut today. Here’s exactly why you should settle down to watch Quatermass And The Pit

There are some stories that, despite the ravages of time, continue to resonate down the decades. Quatermass And The Pit is one such example, and perhaps the finest British sci-fi movie ever made.

Already a hit television series in the 1950s, a time when the adventures of Professor Bernard Quatermass were enormously popular, Quatermass And The Pit’s script spent several years in limbo. Other stories featuring the professor had been adapted for the big screen before (these were 1955’s The Quatermass Xperiment, released in the Us as The Creeping Unknown, and Quatermass 2, retitled Enemy From Space), but a lack of interest from American financiers meant that Nigel Kneale’s Pit script sat around unfilmed for six years.

It’s no exaggeration to say that the wait was worth it. »
