Critics Choice Documentary Winners

by Nathaniel R

"Jane," now in theaters, took the top prize at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards

Perhaps if I'm too stay in the Bfca (home to the "Critic's Choice Awards") I should run for actual office within them. Why? Well, change from within. I literally never understand their decisions like awards ceremonies where there are no rules as to how large a category is or isn't. They have this same problem in their main movie awards to a small degree but their documentary competition is even more unruly/nonsensical. These awards, held last night in Brooklyn, had (pause for shuddering) 16 nominees for Best Documentary Feature but 10 nominees for Best Director and only 6 nominees for Debut Documentary and so on and so on. No rhyme or reason!

But herewith, this year's winners (links go to reviews if we've covered them). All of the feature film winners are on Oscar's long

Why Ryan Gosling Is Going to Win the Best Actor Oscar This Year

  • BuzzSugar
Image Source: Lionsgate The award season tides might just be changing. Every year, there are clear favorites for Oscars, made pretty obvious after the Critic's Choice, Golden Globes, and SAG Awards all get handed out. About a month ago, if you'd asked us (or really, any Oscars odds-makers), we would have said that Casey Affleck was going to sweep the whole season and pick up best actor statues all the way to the Oscars. But the season has been more interesting than most, and now, we'd like to put out a theory that now has a lot of steam: Ryan Gosling will win the best actor Oscar for La La Land. Here's why we think he has a very strong shot. Get Ready: Brie Larson's Next Red-Carpet Reveal Will Probably Surprise Us

Get Ready: Brie Larson's Next Red-Carpet Reveal Will Probably Surprise Us
She's got a Golden Globe, Critic's Choice and SAG award all under belt—now there's only the Oscar left. Will Brie Larson win? More importantly (to us), what will she wear? We're only half way through red carpet season, and already the Room star has impressed both fashion critics and fans at almost every turn. Does her major wardrobe choices reflect her earnest to win the golden statue? Perhaps, but every time she delights us on the red carpet, we want her to win that much more. From just looking at her red-carpet gowns from recent past, you will notice Brie has a habit of wearing seemingly simple dresses. On closer look though, there are unexpected details to elevate and amp up the entire...

Jacob Tremblay, Awards Season Hero, Got to Meet Leo at the SAG Awards
Jacob Tremblay, the 9 year-old star of Room, is this year's awards season frontrunner — not for any specific award, just for the honor of having the most fun at classy parties. And let us tell you, Jacob Tremblay has been having a lot of fun: Winning at the Critic's Choice Awards, dancing to "Uptown Funk" at afterparties, meeting Bb-8. Tremblay continued his campaign at the SAG Awards tonight. In his adorable red carpet interview (see below), he said that he had one goal for the evening: To meet Leonardo DiCaprio. Guess what, Jacob Tremblay met Leonardo DiCaprio. And that's not all, Tremblay also charmed audiences with a presenter bit with his co-star Brie Larson (who later took home a trophy for Room). "I can still remember the first time I was nominated for a SAG award," Tremblay joked. "I was only 9 years old, and I was competing against Batman." All hail

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Recap: Dr. Bad News Doctor
Last year's "Stakeout" is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Brooklyn Nine-Nine's low points, so I wasn't necessarily pumped for another episode that puts Jake and a second character in forced isolation. Although "9 Days" covers a lot of well-trod territory for the show — which has also already had plots about Jake and Holt working a case from Holt's house, and both Jake and Rosa trying to work through an illness or injury against their colleagues' advice — this pairing works, thanks to sharp writing and the continuing genius of freshly minted Critic's Choice Award winner Andre Braugher.Eschewing the show's usual stand-alone cold open, "9 Days" dives right in, explaining that Holt's a bit off these days because his husband, Kevin, is still away on a teaching assignment at the Sorbonne. Jake's closed all his cases (and bragged loudly enough about it that Amy

'I'm in Love with Her': Amy Schumer's Boyfriend Posts Cute Instagram Message - As She 'Misses' Him on Tour
They say distance makes the heart grow fonder, and that certainly seems to be the case for Amy Schumer and her new beau. Schumer first introduced us to her man, Ben Hanisch, a few weeks ago in an Instagram post, and the pair have been almost inseparable since. But on Monday, the Trainwreck star revealed she was "missing" him after having to go on tour. "Missing these people on the road," Schumer, 34, captioned a black and white group photo in which Hanisch, 29, stands next to her. Image Source: Getty / Kevin Winter Before Christian Bale took the stage on Sunday night to accept the Critic's Choice Awards for best actor in a comedy for his role in The Big Short, the actor excitedly turned around and kissed his wife, but what you didn't expect to see was the awkward kiss between him and director Adam McKay that followed. But that wasn't all! Shortly after, The Big Short won the award for best comedy and when the cast took the stage, Christian and Adam shared yet another kiss, only this time it happened on stage. "Collaborative love between Christian and I, don't judge it," Christian announced, before diving into his acceptance speech. Oscar Prediction Updates - Carol's Up. But What's Down?

Will Oscar voters love how obsessed with Oscar statues the SAG nominated Trumbo is? It's been an enormously busy week with precursor decisions confusing and clarifying in equal measure. Even if you don't put much stock in the Critic's Choice Awards (also known as the Bfca, an organization that includes your host) it'll be interesting to see what they come up with since ballots were due today and so many questions remain. Though the organization prides itself on Oscar predictive power (a very weird thing to pride yourself on unless you're a pundit rather than a critic) the confusing nature of the race won't make things easy on any pundit.

While I've been accused of overthinking various races often (who, me?) such is the curse of punditry and Oscar obsessiveness. Here's where I think we stand now...

Picture & Director If this race we're taking place in 2008 with the old school

With only Krampus as a new wide release this weekend was a repeat of Thanksgiving weekend with The Hunger Games, The Good Dinosaur and Creed leading the way at the multiplex and Oscar hopefuls like Carol doing good business on a miniscule amount of screens. Spotlight and Brooklyn -- which are both looking lockish for Best Picture nominations -- continue to reap the benefits of great word-of-mouth audience response.

"Um, why am I in Krampus?" -Toni Collette to her agent, probably.

Consider This: 'The Americans' Showrunners on Season 4 Plans, Reaction to the Season 3 Finale and Emmy Conspiracy Theories
After just one year, it could have been an oversight. Two years, though, that's a travesty. And if "The Americans" goes three straight years without grabbing a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor or Lead Actress, then it can be safely assumed that if there is a God, he's a cruel one. Widely regarded as one of the best shows on television, "The Americans" has developed an obsessed group of critics and fans, as well as a vast of array of non-tv Academy accolades. The TCA, AFI, Critic's Choice and Peabody Awards have all honored the period drama from creator Joseph Weisberg and executive producer Joel Fields. Hopefully, this is the year the Emmys finally follow suit. Best of Late Night TV: Jason Statham's Slap Jack and Allison Janney's Kiss Crusade

  • Moviefone
If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

There's nothing better than watching Jimmy Fallon slap his guests on "The Tonight Show," which brings us to Slap Jack. It's like Black Jack only with slapping, and is basically an excuse for Jimmy to vent the pressure he feels from being the funniest host on late night television. This week's victim? Jason Statham.

Apparently, Allison Janney planted a kiss on James Corden at the "Critic's Choice Awards," and now things are somewhat awkward -- especially since Allison was a guest on James' show. However, Allison spoofed herself by filming a clip wherein she kisses random members of James' staff, and it's Hilarious. Allison Janney for all the awards!

7 Pieces of Solid Writing Advice from 'Jane the Virgin'
"Jane the Virgin" is kind of a one-stop-shop for everything you could ever want from a TV show — it's got soap-worthy plotlines (an evil twin just got impaled!), great acting and writing (the show just nabbed some well-deserved Critic's Choice nominations), and one of the best love triangles currently on air (shots fired, "The Vampire Diaries"). But you know what it also has in spades? Uplifting writing advice! Over the course of the season, Jane's made major in-roads on her writing career — it's quickly gone from secret hobby to full-blown pursuit, and along the way, she's learned a lot of lessons that the rest of us writers can benefit from as well. And hey, when you think about it, these writing tips actually come care of showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman and her crack team of writers, and who doesn't want to hang on their every word? 'Orange Is the New Black' Season 3 Clip: Crazy Eyes Goes Mad!
Netflix has released the first clip for Orange Is the New Black in anticipation of Season 3 this summer. It seems Suzanne (Uzo Aduba) has some Vee feelings to deal with.
