After Review

3 August 2014 10:01 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Putting it nicely, After is not an easy film to sit through. Human emotion is not something that can easily be “manipulated,” and while I sincerely don’t want to use that word based on writer Sabrina Gennarino’s scripted intentions, no word better describes the gratuitous drama each Valentino family member subjects viewers to. Despair, deceit, treachery, withdrawal – no character is safe from a gamut of emotional follies, but after a while, the endless parade of obvious baggage becomes far too cumbersome for such a dreary travel. Even worse are the motivations for these actions, presented without coherence or detail in a way that makes any sort of meaningful attachment next to impossible. After never quite tries to be anything more than a cheap tissue waster, ending on a note that almost guilts you for enjoying no parts of the ride – a truly depressing affair with a baffling amount of anger. »

Fun fact: This week’s Mistresses is officially sponsored by the letters “O,” “M,” “F” and “G.” But don’t get it twisted: The letters in question should not be locked exclusively in the standard “Oh Em Eff Gee” formation.

“O,” for instance, also pertains to the “Big O” achieved by Karen and Jacob as they go from office mates to just plain mates (affectionately known as “popping open a tube of Pillsbury Croissant Rolls”).

Your Week in Beefcake: “The Witches of East End” Prodigal Stud and a “True Blood” Farewell

12 July 2014 8:00 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

The TV landscape had an extra plentiful bounty of shirtless hunks showing off ripped, hard-earned physiques and that makes the latest Your Week in Beefcake especially fun. Not only do we get to see if The Witches of East End can beat last season’s hunk quotient, General Hospital had an epic day of shirtlessness.

The glorious cheese platter of magic and hot guys that is The Witches of East End came back Sunday. I’ll be honest, I had a hard time following the plot because it looks like Lifetime took away their lighting budget. Still, murky as things were, the show did introduce us to Joanna‘s son Frederik (Christian Cooke) who casts sinister magic spells in the forest shirtless.

After reuniting with his mother and his distrusting Aunt Wendy we see him in his room. But there’s a plot reason for his shirtlessness! He’s »

Nominations for the Emmys were announced yesterday and that means it was time for Orphan Black fans to cry, “Why do we make jokes about the Golden Globes’ credibility when they at least had the good sense to notice Tatiana Maslany?” (Among many, many other snubs). The Hollywood Reporter‘s Tim Goodman argues that the Emmys should expand to include more nominees in each category to “reflect the magnitude of the industry.”

TVLine reports that while there’s no hope for the original How I Met Your Dad pilot, a series is still being developed and could see a new pilot being made with the original cast, a new cast or a mix.
