The Best of Soaps 2014

16 December 2014 3:10 PM, PST | TVGuide - Breaking News | See recent TVGuide - Breaking News news »

Death! Deceit! Dopplegangers! It's the year's best in daytime drama.

Best Soap: (tie) The Bold and the Beautiful and General Hospital

Why choose between them when both shows left us in such a sudsational state of bliss? B&B, daytime's most sumptuous serial, took us on location to Abu Dhabi, Paris, Monte Carlo, and Amsterdam for lots of awesome — and watery — action: Hope and Wyatt got hitched at sea, Quinn bitch-shoved Ivy into the river Seine, and Ridge plunged from a helicopter into the Persian Gulf. But the home front was no less riveting, with family warfare and corporate chaos. This is classic soap, done exquisitely.

Saturday Night Live Recap: James Franco and Nicki Minaj Get Meta

7 December 2014 9:38 AM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

The host and musical guest of this week's SNL have a lot more in common than one might realize. Nicki Minaj has an entire arsenal of alter egos she uses to express herself in song, and James Franco wears more hats than a hyperactive haberdasher with dissociative identity disorder. They also have a habit of winking at their audiences, whether its James Franco playing an artist named "Franco" on General Hospital, or Minaj literally winking during the most gifable moment of her "Anaconda" video. In one of the most meta episodes of SNL in recent memory, both host and guest barely stop winking at us.Aside from her musical performances, Minaj appeared in three sketches, and in each of them, the fact of who she was playing served as a knowing nod to her own place in the culture. Nicki Minaj playing Beyonce is a commentary on her status as »

FX doesn't submit 'Fargo' as 'Transparent,' 'True Detective' lead WGA TV nominations

4 December 2014 5:49 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic »

ABC News Takes Over ‘The View’ As Ratings Dwindle (Exclusive)

For 18 seasons, “The View” has been one of the crown jewels of ABC Daytime programming block. But in a significant restructuring that could foreshadow the management style of incoming president Ben Sherwood, ABC’s daytime executives are losing oversight of the show, Variety has learned.

Starting today, “The View” will be part of the non-fiction branch of programming within ABC News, which produces the documentary series “NY Med.” The talk show will now be in the growing portfolio of ABC News president James Goldston, Sherwood’s right-hand man who helped revamp “Good Morning America.”

“Moving ‘The View’ to our non-fiction programming group now allows it to fully draw on the vast resources of ABC News and our team in New York, where the show is based right next door,” Goldston says in a memo Variety obtained from the network that will circulate to staffers on Thursday morning. “We couldn’t »
