'The Bob Newhart Show' Memorial Day weekend marathon: 'The show holds up,' says star

Bob Newhart believes being smart, and not overly specific, about its time has helped his first sitcom's popularity endure.

Hallmark Channel presents 12 hours of evidence Sunday (May 27) with a 40th-anniversary marathon of "The Bob Newhart Show," a 1972-78 staple of the CBS Saturday-night lineup that included such other classics as "All in the Family," "M*A*S*H," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "The Carol Burnett Show."

Newhart's famously buttoned-down humor perfectly suited his role as Chicago psychologist Bob Hartley, whose office misadventures were balanced by his home life with wife Emily (Suzanne Pleshette).

"First, Hallmark is very classy and secondly, the show holds up," Newhart tells Zap2it of his pleasure about this weekend's marathon. "It's enjoying a renaissance, and that's a tribute to the writing and performing. We didn't really go too much into the style of the era, which I think accounts for the longevity ... though in some scenes, »

Warning Shot and other themes composed by Jerry Goldsmith - Si Zentner

Dutton Vocalion is a company whose soundtracks feature regularly in our printed version of Cinema Retro. Just missing the deadline on this occasion are two superb debut releases, one of which includes Jerry Goldsmith’s excellent score (performed by Si Zentner) for Warning Shot (1967). Originally released on LP (Lst 7498), Vocalion’s new CD (Cdlk 4470) has smartly doubled up the release to include Si Zentner’s 1964 album From Russia With Love (originally released LP Lst 7353). Warning Shot is a relatively short score, but as with the original album, it includes some great interpretations of Goldsmith favourites such as the Von Ryan march, The Prize, A Patch of Blue and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Warning Shot is a film that generally tends to slip under the radar. However, it’s a neat little thriller starring the ever reliable David Janssen »

Ben Gazzara, who made a career of playing virile roles on stage, screen, TV and in real life, died Friday in Manhattan. He was 81. The cause was pancreatic cancer, his lawyer told The New York Times. "My voice was this deep even then," he told People in 1976. The urge to perform "screwed up my schooling, »

Interviews: Actresses Millie Perkins, Diane Baker of ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’

7 January 2012 9:30 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The year was 1959, and the film was “The Diary of Anne Frank,” based on the 1955 Pulitzer Prize winning stage play, which in turn was adapted from the famous diaries of a young girl hiding from Nazi occupiers in WWII Holland. Two actresses, Millie Perkins (Anne) and Diane Baker (her sister Margot), made their movie debuts in this renowned film.

The director of “The Diary of Anne Frank,” the celebrated George Stevens, led a nationwide search for the lead teenage actress to portray Anne, after Audrey Hepburn, Natalie Wood and Susan Strasberg (Anne in the original play) passed on the role. The film won Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress (Shelley Winters), Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography, and was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director.

Millie Perkins and Diane Baker were participating in the “Hollywood Celebrities and Memorabilia Show” in September when they talked to HollywoodChicago.com. »
