Tedd Pierce and Bill Danch originally pitched this as a Sylvester and Speedy Gonzales cartoon when they were working on the Looney Tunes series, but director Robert McKimson was unhappy with the original story and asked for rewrites. By the time Pierce and Danch were able to carry out the rewrites, Warner Bros. had shut down their animation department, leading to the two selling their story to Gene Deitch, who retooled it into a Tom and Jerry short.
The chess piece decorated calling cards seen in this short are a nod to those of Paladin, in the popular TV Western series Have Gun, Will Travel.
