Storyline

Legend has it that if the famous Barbary Apes leave the Rock of Gibraltar, it's a sign that the British will lose control of it. During World War II, a British officer is put in charge of the apes. When he detects that the animals' morale is slipping, he hatches a plan to go behind the German lines to "kidnap" a new ape for his charges to lift their spirits before the Germans find out about their condition and use it as propaganda. A very under-rated, nicely produced comedy
12 January 2002 | by (Cambridge, England) – See all my reviews

There is a legend that if the barbary apes ever leave the Rock of Gibraltar, the British will be thrown out shortly afterwards. This is the basis for this charming war-time comedy, where Terry- Thomas plays an officer in charge of the apes. When morale amongst them starts to fall, it falls to him to pinch a new companion ape from behind enemy lines to cheer the apes up again before the Germans use the story for propaganda purposes. A funny film with some great characters; it's a real pity it isn't better known. If anyone knows where I can replace our fading copy, please post the information! The video doesn't seem to be available anywhere, sadly.
