During the American Civil War, a southerner is in the process of being hanged off Owl Creek Bridge by the Union forces. He is standing on a plank on the outside of the span of the bridge over the waters of Owl Creek, his arms tied behind his back and his legs tied together as the noose is placed around his neck. He is bracing for the moment when he will feel the plank drop from below his feet, he thinking among other things at that moment about his happy wife and children at home. But the process of the incident will end up being far much more emotional for him as he has the possibility of escaping his seeming fate.
