Not enough Serling
30 May 2014 | by (Lincolnshire, UK) – See all my reviews

A decent but utterly unremarkable little movie based on a story by the mighty Rod Serling but lacking his meaty, thoughtful dialogue. The tight structure gives the film a solid foundation, which keeps it together while director Edward L. Cahn is busy making it all look as televisual as possible, choosing the most boring angle in any given shot.

The plot: beat cop Chris Warfield shoots a fleeing suspect, only to discover that it's a 13-year-old boy; the rest of the movie revolves around his indictment and his attempt to get on with his life, although it's all done with very little energy and performances that aren't really up to depicting deep psychological struggle.

Somehow it's more than the sum of its parts. It's not a neglected gem, or even particularly good, being a victim of its own budgetary and creative limitations; but it is pretty involving, and although the performances are a bit flat, there's some enjoyable character work in the screenplay. A Serling script would have made all the difference.
